5.0 out of 5 stars Offensively stupendous 1 Dec 2011
Format:Kindle Edition
Things to know about this book before you buy it; there is a lot of swearing, the imagery is "out-there" (aka visceral and hilarious), the advise is some of the best in the business, it is non-judgemental (but brutally honest), and did I mention that there's a lot of swearing? If that bothers you I strongly suggest you find your writing advice elsewhere. Or if it does but you like being offended then buy away - you will not be disappointed.

I previously bought and read Wendig's 250 Things You Should Know About Writing, and both books work well independently. Together however they form a fantastic source for aspiring writers everywhere. A working pen-monkey himself, Wendig has been there, done it, killed it, stuffed it and sold it for gold, so he does know what he's talking about. I've also read his fictional works and can safely say that this man knows how to write.

Highly recommended for anyone interested in the craft of writing who isn't afraid to stick their head into the rabbit hole (with the aforementioned rabbit holding a machine gun to your face.) Brilliant stuff and I can't wait for more.

5.0 out of 5 stars Exhaustive, exhausting, exhilirating 9 April 2013

Again, Chuck Wendig seeks to bring out all the lists that you could possibly want and more.

The idea here is that there is something for everyone, but rather than being a dry and passionless description of the writers craft, it's a mind-blowing onslaught of enthusiasm and support.

I'd thoroughly recommend this and 250 ways to be a better writer to anyone having problems with motivation writing. It really is very, very good.

If you want to be a writer than buy this book.

Dont' get me wrong, it's not going to suddenly make you capable of producing the next best-seller and it's not going to make you the greatest word-smith (penmonkey??) on the face of the planet, but it's packed full of really helpful information presented in a sublimely irreverent way. I guess I should warn you here that much of the descriptive language used is not for the shy and retiring - let's put it this way, in my head the whole thing came out as narrated by Frankie Boyle. But at the end of it I'd learnt stuff from somebody who knew exactly what they were talking about and I'd laughed myself silly.

I bought the kindle version but will be going back to buy the paper version to keep on my repeat read shelves. I say again, buy this book!

Every character is motivated, and that motivation is the engine that pushes them from one end of the scene and out the other. Asking this while writing helps you keep the motivations of these characters in line: these motivations drive the plot. "e;
