3.0 out of 5 stars Could be better 20 April 2009
By Georgy
This is a nicely presented handy sized book with attractive pictures, it has lots of ideas for different toppings etc but when you look closely most of the recipes are the same, simply a victoria sponge mix. I would not have bought the book if I had looked more closely at it.

The other thing I have found is that the quantities suggested are huge. I tried halving a recipe for 18 cupcakes and still struggled to fit the half mixture into 12 paper cases.

1.0 out of 5 stars 500 sources of frustration 11 May 2009
So far we've tried two of the recipes in this book, and both have had problems with quantities. The measurements given seem to yield around twice the number of cakes as the book says, and the chocolate muffins had far too much beaten egg white in them anyway, resulting in a soufflé-like collapse of epic and gooey proportions.

As most of the 500 recipes seem to be variants on a couple of dozen basic mixtures, and both of these we tried have failed, I don't hold out much hope. We might try another, but to be honest our faith is seriously shaken, and we've had no problems with Nigella's recipes at all; well, other than they are too yummy.

I would not recommend this book as I do not believe the recipes have been tried and tested at all.

5.0 out of 5 stars Lovely little book of recipes! 31 Jan 2008
Amazon Verified Purchase
This is a great book full of recipes to suit every diet and every occasion, and also has a great mixture of traditional sweet cakes and more modern savoury options. It also includes lots of variations for each recipe, and gorgeous photos. The book is very small, but the recipes are easy to read and it's also easy to store. I thoroughly recommend it.
