5.0 out of 5 stars Foul mouthed, drunken and...what exactly is that he's smoking? 22 Mar 2012

Brace yourself...because this book isn't for sissy-pants writers. Chuck's blunt, abrasive, vulgar, has some weird thing about goats that I don't really want to go into, hilarious, and, more often than not, right. Do not expect a check list of things that you need to tick off to sell a book, or a dry exposition on authorial voice. Expect more a person with A.D.D. dispensing valuable writing advice that can help all aspects of your career. Chuck says himself that these won't guarantee you a sweet book deal, but I can tell you from experience that the advice is valuable. More than that, its entertaining as all hell.

Well, not really 500. Sorry, I know you wanted to read that.

Ok guys- this book is GREAT for writers. 500 More Ways To Be A Better Writer is a menu for your authorial cortex to brainificate and feast on whenever you need it. I run into problems writing and I have found answers here. This isn't a selection you read once. You keep coming back to this. Chuck, by writing this, becomes your phantom mentor. Always there to kick you in the rear. Punch you in the keys. Yell at you like R. Lee Ermey. Or watch you sleep. ... Scary, huh?

The black humor, shock and point blank word slamming is composed perfectly to help you REMEMBER what you've read so that you can APPLY it to your work. I've read other books on the topic and nothing else comes close. This is the real deal. In fact, this is something a character in a movie would find in some kind of exotic shop run by a magician who sells Magwai. Yeah... whatever...

The book is laid out well and flows well. Each topic seems to flow right into the next. It is very easy to read and comprehend. Buy this if you are serious about upping your game. Period.

P.S. It's also great for a good laugh... the whole way through.

5.0 out of 5 stars like that foulmouthed uncle who tells it to you straight 1 Jun 2012

That's how I see Chuck Wendig, both in his writing books and on his blog and twitter. He knows writing, both the craft and the business.

His books are comprised of lists of '25's and each of the twenty five points is broken down, sometimes hilariously, often profanely. It's the kind of book you read a list at a time: I recommend perhaps not where people will think you're a loon if you bust out laughing suddenly, because you likely will!

Hilarity and the clear glee he takes in slinging naughty words like a food fight in an 80s teen movie aside, there is a LOT of wisdom in here, the kind that's only learned through the School of Hard Knocks. He doesn't sugar coat anything about writing or the business aspects of writing, and sometimes he will gutpunch you with exactly what you need to hear.

One list I recall mentioned the problem of being around those groups of other writers: they either love everything and thus no critique is valuable, or they are just toxic, hateful people, and his solution is to bust yourself free. Perhaps not the most profound advice, but writers have all experienced both sides of that circle--the yaysayers and naysayers--and sometimes having someone slap you in the face with it is just the reminder you need. So even if you hear 'oh I've read this stuff before, like protagonists should be interesting blah blah' his condensed, very readable style I've found valuable even when I already 'know' these things, just for the reminder factor.

And then of course, he does have some terrific insights, as a reader, as well.

In short, if you want to write, at any level (I think I'm the only person in the world who wants to write, but doesn't want to be published--I just like slapping words down and talking to other people about writing ) and you're ready for some tell-it-to-you-straight advice? Chuck Wendig is your man. And having seen him on twitter and his blog, I can tell you that he walks the walk, too.

I love Chuck's blog. I love his writing books. He is a very, very clever and very, very rude writer. I am so jealous at his ability to make me smile, blush and learn at the same time. My new hero!

5.0 out of 5 stars Hilarious 27 Jun 2014

Chuck Wendig is one of my favorite bloggers and authors. He takes what could be boring material and livens it up with his own creative twists and brand of crudeness. This book is no exception. Read it if you want to laugh and learn at the same time. Don't read it if you're uptight about swearing. Especially don't be uptight about swearing, read it anyway, and then give the book a bad rating because of the swearing. That's bad author karma right there.
