il film racconta il rapporto tra summer, una ragazza poco incline all'amore, e tom, un ragazzo sognatore che si innamorera' perdutamente di lei. nell'arco di 500 giorni viene raccontata la bizzarra storia d'amore, dal punto di vista di tom, sulle note di celebri brani pop. avendo grande esperienza nei videoclip, non stupisce che webb metta la musica in primo piano. in uno dei momenti chiave del film, tom ascolta "there is a light that never goes out" degli smiths sul suo ipod mentre e' in ascensore con summer, che sente il brano e commenta che ha sempre amato quella band. la musica fa da ponte tra i due protagonisti, puo' fare ballare o piangere a secondo dei momenti. descrive sentimenti che altrimenti sarebbero impossibili da esprimere.
