Product Description

There are distinct qualities that make a movie a cult: a devoted and niche following, popularity based on word-of-mouth enthusiasm, and a tendency to remain in fans memories years after release, as well as many other intricacies, often hotly debated by film buffs. 500 Essential Cult Movies sifts through the greatest movies ever made, to bring together a list of the best cult classics that ever graced the cinema screens or didnt, in some cases! From Carpenter to Lucas, Cronenberg to Lynch, Scorsese to Spielberg the big names in cult are all there, as well as the more obscure films that may have sneaked below the radar. Sorted into chapters based on genre, this vast collection includes plot synopses, reviews and further viewing recommendations for each title. 500 Essential Cult Movies is a must-read for all film aficionados and aspiring buffs alike.

As a not-so-young movie aficionado (and not just a 'cult' movie goer) this book really hit the spot. It's like being re-introduced to many old favourites across every genre and it's written in a way that just makes you want to go and see them again. As the introduction says, you can either read straight through it, or use it as a reference guide - either way, I think it's a great addition to anyone's library of film books and clearly a labour of love on the part of the author.

As far as the definition of 'cult' goes, I agree with the author when she says that a cult movie can also be a mainstream movie and if the Star Wars series isn't 'cult', then I'm not sure what is.

The layout is excellent, the pictures are well-chosen and the suggestions for further viewing are very interesting and, if you're a neophyte filmgoer, very helpful.

If I have a criticism, it is that I hate the headline typeface. But maybe that's just me.

I'm really enjoying reading this book,if you are the kind of film fan (or snob!) that thinks a cult film has to be made in Bulgaria in 1939 and only 8 people have seen it then it's probably not for you!! however if you are a well rounded genuine film fan you will love it!!

This is quite simply the best guide to cult movies on the market. Jennifer Eiss hits the mark time and again, highlighting the more obvious film faves, but also reminding me of forgotten cult classics and unearthing a few complete gems of which I had previously never heard. Her descriptions are erudite, enlightening and entertaining while offering a deep and unique insight to both an aficionado and amateur film buff alike. She is the Eiss queen of cult.
