Product Description

Product Description

No other volume has ever presented such a diverse and captivating collection of contemporary animal-themed ceramics. Juried by distinguished artist and educator Joe Bova, this magnificent gallery includes pieces from an international group of artists; the beautifully crafted works range from the representational to the abstract, from artful realism to provocative surrealism (including animal-human hybrids). Ann Marais image of a waterfowl painted onto a porcelain dish has a restrained, Asian quality. Sharkus painted and smoke-fired stoneware turtle could easily be mistaken for the living creature. Bova provides astute and illuminating commentary overall, with selected artists notes.

3.0 out of 5 stars It's OK but not fantastic and worth 5 stars!, 7 April 2008
The quality of the book is not fantastic, it's so thick a hardback copy would be much more suitable. There is a rich diversity of work throughout the book with each piece having one photograph, these are of good quality. Some of the artists are represented intermittantly throughout the book rather than being grouped together, which I founbd a little annoying as I would identify a piece of work I liked then 20 pages later find another piece and then realise it was the same artist. It does not give the reader a great insight into the inspiration and processes used to create the artwork. It is good book if you want to look at lots of pictures of sculptured animals rather than the meaning behind the piece of work.

This is a wonderful book for those who need some inspiration and some ideas.
Wonderful pictures.
The artwork is funny, extraordinary and sometimes scary. I couldn't belive that people could make such a fantastic work with just a ball of clay.
Clay has no limit that's for sure.
This is a perfect book at the cheramic studio or in a creative home, or just for fun.
Buy it and become creative!!

4.0 out of 5 stars Inspiring, 6 April 2009

I am a fan of this series, clearly designed to inspire. I know they are simply a collection of photos, but you really can feast on the ideas of others and gain the confidence to 'have a go'yourself.A little technical info on each and every item photographed would enhance this work still further.
