Book Description

7 Oct 2010

William Roache has been part of Coronation Street since the very first episode, in December 1960, when he first appeared playing the character of Ken Barlow.

In 50 Years on the Street: My Life with Ken Barlow, Roache reflects on half a century of treasured memories accumulated during his time working on the long-running soap. He revisits the programme's most memorable moments and ponders the secret of its success while exploring the history of the show from its very early days of live broadcasts to the demands of the Street's schedule in 2010.

Roache reveals what it is like to have played the perennially popular role of Ken Barlow over the decades and reflects upon the actors he has worked with during the past 50 years, using his unique perspective to provide insights and anecdotes galore.

50 Years on the Street: My Life with Ken Barlow is a celebration of William Roache's acting career in a year that marks a very special anniversary both for him and for Coronation Street.

4.0 out of 5 stars A good, quick read! 23 Feb 2013
Format:Hardcover
If you'd have told me that one day I would be collecting William Roache's memoirs and enjoying every one, I would of laughed. Indeed, I received some funny looks whilst reading '50 Years On The Street', but after picking up his first book, I decided to buy his most recent biography when I found it in a used book store.

I always used to enjoy 'Coronation Street', back when it was the gritty, working-class drama with realistic characters that William describes in this book. I know that times have to change, but I do believe the show to be nowhere near as good as it used to be. Because this book is a chronicle of Bill's 'Street' life and a biography of the fictional life of Ken Barlow, this will probably only appeal to fans of the show, although he does briefly speak of his family life and pre-Ken days (he has already gone into that in a lot more detail in his first memoir).

There isn't much in the way of gossip about his co-stars, instead he reveals only affectionate memories about them of which I found very interesting. He also talks about the behind the scenes aspect of the show and all of the different producers that have come in and how they have marked their mark.

Although the book isn't all that detailed and William does repeat himself, there is a lot to like and find of interest in '50 Years On The Street'.

3.0 out of 5 stars Rather Repetitive 20 Sep 2011
Format:Hardcover
Really one for the Coronation Street fanatics. It's an enjoyable run through of the British soap without really telling us anything new. Roache is an amiable host but the book is rather thin in details and repeats itself an awful amount. It was easy to read but would leave anybody cold who is not a fan of the show.
