GEORGE GLENN JONES was born in 1931 in the East Texas town of Saratoga. As a kid he sang for tips on the streets of nearby Beaumont. By age 24, he had been married twice, served in the Marines and was a veteran of the Texas honky-tonk circuit. On a recording session in 1955 for Starday Records, producer Pappy Dailey suggested he quit singing like his idols, Lefty Frizzell, Roy Acuff and Hank ... Read more in Amazon's George Jones Store

5.0 out of 5 stars The King Of Country!!!! 30 Oct 2008
Format:Audio CD|Verified Purchase
You will never find a compilation cd of all George's work. It's just not possible since he recorded so many songs. So instead this collection picks one song from each year, from when he first started out in 1955 up to his recent work at 2004.
There are simply too many great hits here to mention but to just hand pick a few, there's his signature song He Stopped Loving Her Today,White Lightning,She Thinks I Still Care,A Picture Of Me Without You,Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes and the very touching ballad Wild Irish Rose-one of my personal favorites.
Also included are some of his duets. To name just a few there's Take Me(with Tammy Wynette),Night Life(with Waylon Jennings),Yesterday's Wine(with Merle Haggard) and A Few Ole Country Boys(with Randy Travis)
Any greatest hits collection from George is going to be excellent and this one is no different. This collection will suit both people new to George's music and also die hard fans.A must collection either way....

5.0 out of 5 stars WHOSE GONNA FILL HIS SHOES 14 July 2008
Format:Audio CD
Jones has charted more singles than any artist in any format of music and while he may not have had the commercial success of Strait, Arnold, Haggard or Cash he retains an almost iconic status with musicians and fans alike. This compliation, taking the best single from each year since he began recording in 1955, charts his career to 2005.

Jones trademark note-bending vocal style (borrowed from Lefty Frizzell and Hank Williams but made his own) is stamped on every track. For me no-one sings 'The Race is On' better than Jones, and my personal favourite 'He Stopped Loving Her Today' is an extraordinary song about a man betrayed by his lover. Despite her actions, he never stopped loving her the rest of his life - the day he stopped loving her turned out to be the day he died. His early stuff such as 'Why Baby Why', 'White Lightning', stands the test of time and there are too many highlights on this 3-disc album to mention. Check out the duets with various greats of the country scene such as Wynette, Parton and Haggard. The more recent years see a slight dip in form though '50,000 names' is a wonderfully sensitive song about the loss of life and the pain their families endure to this day.

When Jones sings about 'Who's Gonna Fill Their Shoes', about the greats who have sung at the Grand Ole Opry it is clear that the boots he will leave behind will be big and hard to fill. In short, this is a must for those collectors who want an insight into one of the giants of country music, without whom the picture would not be complete.

If you want a well-chosen compilation of 'America's second best singer' ( as Frank Sinatra described Jones), this is it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Five Stars Are NOT Enough 25 Feb 2009
By Alan Houston - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
The late, great George Jones was one of the greatest singers ever...not "great country singer"...great singer PERIOD. He could express emotion through song as well as the greatest opera baritones of the past century. His recording career began in 1954, and continued until 2011...and during those 60 years, no other male singer came close to matching "The Voice".

And, as this 50 song collection covers a full 50 years, from his earliest recordings to some of his most recent. These songs include some of the best known "hits", as well as some terrific songs that didn't get much radio play. The sound quality is very impressive, with the songs from the 1960's having wonderful sound quality that closely matches today's highest quality recordings.

The other thing this collection does is to make clear that George Jones is one of the rare musicians who got better as he got older. Both his voice and his song writing got stronger and more expressive as he got older.

This collection is a rare bargain. It brings together songs from many prior "greatest hits" albums, as well as some rarely heard songs that are very difficult to find. This is an astounding amount of great music that has been lovingly remastered and made available at a bargain price.

There is only ONE weakness in this collection: George Jones recorded HUNDREDS of great songs...not even a collection of 50 of his best can begin to cover the range and scope of his career. I am looking forward to a future box set with 200 or 300 of his best recordings, remastered at the same superb level as this collection...yes, his career included at LEAST that many great recordings. When singers are eligible to be placed on Mount Rushmore, George Jones will be the first.

You don't have to be a George Jones fan to enjoy this collection. Anyone who loves traditional country music or great singing needs to hear George Jones at his very best. If you have a friend or a young family member who says "I don't like country music", buy them this collection...anyone who appreciates great singing will love this collection. We will miss you George, you were a one of a kind man, and a one of kind singer.

5.0 out of 5 stars george jones NEVER disappoints 21 Nov 2004
By Thomas D. Hughes - Published on Amazon.com

He's incapable of it! This 3-disc compilation is a must for any Jones fan. Disc 2 is my favorite - it has many of his Billy Sherrill-era hits on it, and it's sweet to have them back to back on one cd. But the cds with early years hits and later stuff are great too. You cannot quibble with such greatness. George Jones - one of the world's all time best singers.

5.0 out of 5 stars 50 Years of Hits - George Jones 3 Aug 2005
By Betty Crocker - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
The three CDs of 50 years of George Jones' hits is an excellent portrayal of the man and his songs. Each song represents a story in his life through good times and bad. A great set of songs to add to the classic country music collector's library.

5.0 out of 5 stars George Jones will always be peerless 27 April 2013
By Matthew G. Sherwin - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
I am very, very saddened at the news that George Jones passed away this morning; he truly was one of the very best and most talented entertainers ever. I love to listen to his music; there wasn't anything he couldn't make mesmerizing and magical with his excellent voice. He wrote great songs and ballads, too! Moreover, this is an outstanding three CD set of nothing but the best from George Jones; it's all fine music by a truly talented artist. In addition, the sound quality is quite good; I agree with people who say that even the recordings from 50 years ago sound fresh and new. For example, "White Lightning" from 1959 sounds terrific!

Another thing that made George's music so special is that he was able to produce so many fine songs despite his personal problems--perhaps in fact his personal problems made him all the more likely to release tunes with great sensitivity and poignancy.

When George Jones sang, people listened. He could make millions of fans happy with his wonderful baritone voice and there was true sincerity, honesty and passion in his voice when he sang. George performed songs so passionately simply because every one of them took something from his personal life and put it right out there so that everyone could experience his feelings as he performed. His songs could make the airwaves sizzle, too! Another thing that makes these CDs special is that they include songs that didn't always get a lot of airplay although I hope that changes with time and continued sales of CD box sets like this one.

While the musical accompaniments always fit in well with George's vocals, he remains squarely front and center, only sharing the spotlight when he performed with other artists. And when he did perform with others, wow how good they sounded! I highly recommend this CD set for any fan of the great George Jones. It remains a fine addition and even essential to any collection someone would want of George's artistry. The more casual fan may want to start with a single CD although his work is so special that this makes a fine place to start--and it won't be the last music by George Jones you get for your music library!

3.0 out of 5 stars Some of George Jones' Greatest Hits Are Missing! 5 Nov 2011
By SimpsonsFan99 - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Audio CD
While George Jones' 50 Years of Hits is a pretty good retrospective of his career, many of his memorable songs are omitted. Tunes such as "If Drinkin' Don't Kill Me (Her Memory Will)" and "Tennessee Whiskey" are needlessly deleted and should have been part of this compilation. Some more of his tunes with Tammy Wynette, such as "Two Story House" and "Golden Ring" wouldn't have hurt, either. Perhaps a fourth disc should have been added.
