The problem for me is that it spans too many genres on each of the 2 discs. There can't be many people who will happily listen to these CDs all the way through.
Incidentally, this is not supposed to be a collection of No. 1s (as stated by an earlier reviewer), although three-quarters of the songs included did hit the top spot. Despite being generally a "safe" compilation, the interesting inclusions are mostly the singles that didn't top the chart. Waterloo Sunset is always welcome even if it stopped at No.2. Heroes is hardly Bowie's most chart-friendly song reaching only 24 in the UK and Teenage Kicks didn't even make the Top 30.
Another complaint is that there is only one song from the 50s - Al Martino's Here In My Heart, no doubt included as it was the first chart-topper in 1952. This is a syrupy ballad, typical of the early years of the chart. But where are the rock 'n' roll songs? Not a single inclusion from the genre that set the chart alight in the late 50s and changed the face of popular music forever.
So, no Elvis, Jerry Lee, Everlys or Buddy Holly and for that matter no Beatles, Rolling Stones, T.Rex, Slade, Status Quo, The Bee Gees, Rod Stewart, Sex Pistols, Michael Jackson, Madonna, Take That and many other great singles acts. I know that some of these are very difficult to licence for compilations, but given the grandiose title of this collection, they could have got some of them.
To really celebrate 50 years of singles history, you'd need at least a 5 disc set - one for each decade, and then you would be able to listen to each disc in its entirety, and not just have a pub quiz companion.
As long as you don't mind having only 1 1/2 CDs that you can listen to without wanting to scream this CD will be good.
I've spotted an immediate mistake with the contents to this release, culled from the great and not so great No.1 hit singles in the U.K. Read more
