Book Description

14 Oct 2004
50 Tunes Volume 1 for Guitar is one book in a 5-book series. The 50 Tunes series is a collection of Bluegrass, Old Time and Celtic tunes for ensembles, families and individuals. This book contains the same 50 tunes as those found in the other 4 books of the series, but carefully designed for the guitar. The melodies in this book range from simple to advanced. Many tunes contain a harmony part to match the melody. 50 Tunes Volume 1 for Guitar is designed for ""flatpicking"" on the acoustic guitar. Flatpicking is a style of guitar playing, prevalent in Celtic and Bluegrass music which features fast soloing with a single, flat pick. Companion CDs included. Book written in tablature only. Tunes recorded by full band, not all instruments featured in every song.

4.0 out of 5 stars It's called tablature 11 Sep 2006
By Everett C. Bennett - Published on Amazon.com
This is an excellent book for begining to intermediate guitar players looking for old time and traditional tunes. It's not exactly bluegrass, although a lot of bluegrass players do these tunes. It has tunes "every parking lot picker should know", the book has a nice format with large, easy to read printing, a beginner's arrangement and one for slightly more advanced players, all the tunes are at a moderate speed on the 3 cd set, and a lot of extras for the beginner. True, it doesn't have sheet music (and, yes, I can read music quite well, thank you very much!) but so what. Most people who play this type of music simply prefer tab. All in all, a nice, well done book, good tunes, and a lot of fun. Advanced players probably wouldn't get a lot from this book, but then again it never hurts to work on your basics. Only reason I didn't give it five stars is that it doesn't include some more advanced tunes and some of the tab isn't quite how I hear/play the tune.

I was pleased to find Geslison's work in a solid Mel Bay book. I was introduced to it playing with family who had some earlier copies of his tunes. We have fiddle, guitar, banjo and bass now and have really enjoyed working off the 'same sheet of music' with the consistency between instruments that allows us to learn and play the same tune in roughly the same way. He really has included some of the most played tunes while including some new ones to work on together. I don't always agree with the embellishments but can work with all the musicians together from the solid basic tunes as he presents them. This is a must have set if you play old time and bluegrass etc with others, especially other instruments. They don't provide lyrics for tunes that have them, but we can easily retrieve them on line.

I got this book as a father's day present. I have been doing bluegrass music for some time now and have just begun learning to flatpick lead parts. I had been looking at this book on a few different sites, but found that it was cheaper here. I was concerned that it didn't have the training cds with it, so I called Amazon and they told me that it did come with the 3 companion cds. It shipped quickly and came packaged very well. Excellent product that, so far, has been very helpful in giving me that extra learning edge.
