Book Description

In “50 Tales of Flight”, the reader is not simply taken aloft in everything from biplanes to Boeings as the title may suggest. True, the flight deck door has been cracked ajar and the canvas cover pulled back from the open cockpit, but this book is built from the ground up. From the alarm clock buzzing to begin the airline pilot’s day to the sound of silence when a light aircraft engine fails and all that lies beneath are trees and cliffs.

There are moments of tension and others of humorous relief to be found amongst this collection of stories from the author’s thirty years aloft. Interspersed are tales of other aviators too. Veterans of wars now passed and some who lost their lives pursuing their passion.

There are images of the sights and people contained within the words. In some ways this book tracks an aviation life, but in others it offers insights and inspiration; just as the sky itself does. For anyone interested in aviation, or just intrigued by this seemingly removed field of endeavour, there is much to be seen through these “50 Tales of Flight”.

5.0 out of 5 stars 50 Tales of Flight: From Biplanes to Boeings 18 April 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
"In one sense, Owen Zupp's 50 Tales of Flight: From Biplanes to Boeings is unputdownable. In another, the individual stories are so exquisitely personal you want to savour each one, linger over it, mull it over, and see if you can apply it to your own life and experience.

Each story is based on Owen Zupp's personal experience, ethic or deep contemplation about the nature of aviation past and present. He brings the history of aviation into the `now' and makes the past relevant to today's reader.

The stories range from the humorous to the tragic but even the saddest has an uplifting note. 50 Tales of Flight: From Biplanes to Boeings is a must read for trainee pilots (who will learn much from an experienced old stager), aviation buffs and anyone interested in memoir based short stories. Each tale is a gem. Beautifully, thoughtfully written. A must read. More than deserving of 5 stars."

-Kristen Alexander, author of "Clive Caldwell. Air Ace" and "Jack Davenport. Beaufighter Leader"

5.0 out of 5 stars Just Like Sitting in the Cockpit 23 April 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
There are plenty of aviation books, most are either written for hobbyists or in the arcane language of top-tier professionals. But here's a book that gives you insight into the blood and bones of aviation and keeps you entertained the whole way through. Probably because the guy who wrote it is full-on, heart-and-soul flyer and a fine wordsmith as well. As you read, you feel these stories were written for you. Whatever your relationship to the world of aviation, you'll love this book.

If you love aviation, this is a great read.

This guy is as passionate about aviation as one can get - from an upbringing in flying, to his own personal experiences worldwide, this book captures the essence of what aviation is all about - from the grassroots, to a career as an International Airine Pilot.

I couldn't put it down!

Owen Zupp has gathered a number of his articles on aviation that range from descriptions of his own experiences through to thoughts & commentaries on historical events. As the title implies, his flight experiences cover the gamut of aviation including flying a Tigermoth and piloting airliners with stories covering many classic locations & "hour building" activities within Australia and across the globe.

This book will be of interest to more than just aviation enthusiasts as Owen's writings primarily capture his thoughts & observations inspired during flight. Owen's stories evoke comparison with Richard Bach's earlier aviation works as he explores our motivations for flight, the inspirations that drive many of us to explore, the challenges we face and the feelings generated by the magic of flight.

It's a great collection of enjoyable & easily read stories that will inspire, delight and inform. Highly recommended!
