As a buyer and avid reader of travel books over the years I was pleasantly surprised to find Mr Lee's book which is both a book to browse but also one where where it has sufficient detail to plan a visit to one of the fascinating destinations.I look forward to further books from this author

5.0 out of 5 stars Picture perfect, 27 April 2006
This review is from: 50 Great Adventures: Extraordinary Places and the People Who Built Them (Paperback)
What an extraordinary book. Fifty Great Adventures is a lavish, crisply designed coffee-table tome. It serves up a feast for the eyes - with brilliant, dynamic photos - and nourishes the mind, with some extremely insightful comments from the author.
Jonathan examines some of the planet's most curious buildings through the people that constructed them, which gives the book a fascinating biographical dimension.
And it has practical value too. There is concise information on how to reach all of the buildings that the book covers. And it'd be well worth reaching them.
Coughing up even a fairly hefty airfare to witness some of the architecture revealed on these glossy pages could easily be justified, on the basis that it's not likely you'll be in the presence of a structure so unusual and imaginative ever again.
A real gem.

5.0 out of 5 stars Successful Adventure, 18 Dec 2005
This review is from: 50 Great Adventures: Extraordinary Places and the People Who Built Them (Paperback)
There must be a place on any Christmas gift list for a book that appeals in so many ways. 50 Great Adventures offers beautiful pictures, personal stories, architectural insight, the most unlikely travel ideas and the most practical advice for realizing them.

This book also has depth. Jonathan Lee’s adventures bring life to the existentialist view that architecture is the act of giving meaning to ‘spaces’ through the creation of ‘places.’ This integrity of concept may explain how a book of such diverse appeal can fit together so well.
