Product Description

Studies have shown that use of 5-HTP natural Amino Acid 5-hydroxytryptophan may help to promote the brain chemical Serotonin. Our 5-HTP is extracted from the Griffonia Seed, using a specially developed process that retains as much of the active components of 5-HTP as possible. It is then compressed into an easy-swallow capsule , and each one provides 100mg of 5-HTP in amino acid form. Research shows that taking a 5-HTP supplement may help to maintain a balanced, relaxed outlook - and 5-HTP seems to be most beneficial if taken before bedtime. Some also find 5-HTP is useful within a weight management programme. We have manufactured our 5-HTP in an easy to swallow capsule , which should make it even more pleasant to swallow. 5.0 out of 5 stars Really do work! 6 May 2011
Verified Purchase
These are great for anyone who suffers from SAD in the winter. They boost the seratonin in the brain and do give one a lift. They are natural and do not produce any side effects like traditional medicine and I would thoroughly recommend. I stop these in the spring but will be back on them come the autumn when I get rather blue.

I have just read an article on these and am most impressed by what I read and so have added this to my original review. Worth anyone who feels low in mood, can't sleep, likely to put on weight easily, or feels anxious, having a look at the reading matter that is available on the web about these.

I am now going to re-order and not wait for the autumn as I have recently got rather low due to extremely painful joints [another thing these can help with apparently]and will review these again to keep anyone who is interested up to date with the results.

To me, it's misleading to have this come up when I search for "melatonin" which is prescription-only here even though it can be purchased freely and cheaply elsewhere - why? Furthermore, GPs can only prescribe a maximum of 2mg melatonin (higher dosages - without reason - have been made prohibitively expensive on the NHS! just like T3) - even where research proves more is needed. Yet it is freely sold everywhere else in the EU and also in the US (try Amazon.com although there will be a customs charge when it arrives here).

Melatonin is a master-hormone produced by the pineal gland deep in the brain. It is mostly produced at night, but only in the dark. If you have street lights blazing into your bedroom, you're in trouble. If you work nights or stay up very late, you're also in trouble. If your health isn't great, ditto.

Melatonin needs to be taken at night, around bedtime. In addition to the well-known jet-lag and sleep benefits (for restless/disturbed sleep as well as insomnia) for which melatonin benefits about 60 per cent who try it, melatonin also has some age-reversing benefits, enhances sexual vigour, relieves stress, and is even useful for hormonal cancers such as breast cancer and prostate cancer. In the very expensive book "Melatonin in the Promotion of Health" (100), there are chapters discussing melatonin's role in bone and dental health, gut health, digestive issues, mental/emotional health, sun and pancreatic protection, cellular repair, heart protection, and protection from eye inflammation and immune system problems as well as the better known breast cancer and sleep disorders.

5.0 out of 5 stars They Work - Be Careful! 27 Jan 2012
I'm willing to accept that using 5-HTP only works for some people. This could quite reasonably be the case, given the scope for diversity in each individual's physiology (genetic polymorphisms, varying levels of the various enzymes involved in the manufacture of serotonin, etc.).

I'm only pointing this out because I have seen reviews on the internet where people swear 5-HTP doesn't work. The fact is, for me, it has an EXTREMELY pronounced effect - mydriasis, increased libido, not to mention the mood alteration. That sure as hell isn't down to the placebo effect.

I guess the take home message here is these tablets, and 5-HTP "supplements" in general, are NOT to be taken lightly! An accidental overdose has the potential to put you in hospital or even kill you, and if you are on ANY psychiatric medications then please, steer well clear until you've consulted your GP. SSRIs in particular can easily be fatal in combination with 5-HTP due to an extended 'overdose' of serotonin. Side note: If you're sweating a lot more than normal, you have probably taken too much.

That aside, these tablets gave me an almost instantaneous lift out of SAD/atypical depression and I can't emphasise enough how grateful I am for that. They might even be too strong for some people - I'd recommend just one tablet, at around 7pm, to minimise the risk of any possible side effects interfering with your day/night. I may actually have to purchase some 50mg tablets in order to spread this dose out.

In summary: Definitely worth a try. Be careful. Be sensible!

5.0 out of 5 stars 'Are these things legal?' 10 Feb 2012
I bought these as a delaying tactic - I was feeling so blue I thought I was headed back to Prozac after a ten year absence and I really wasn't looking forward to it.

So, on the advice of a hippy I met on holiday who had been regaling me with tales of evil drug companies suppressing something that was natural and worked better than Prozac I thought I would give 5-HTP a go. I had no expectation that it would work, St John's Wort never had.

But, wow, hours after I took my first dose I felt good. I had three days of euphoria before I settled into a pretty good relaxed, content state. People at work have noticed the difference, and am finding the high levels of stress very manageable (for the first time). They are so good I feel like there must be a downside - but I am yet to find much on the internet on what that downside might be.

I have become evangelical about 5-HTP, handing it out to friends and family who are suffering with winter blues. My friend sent me a text the other day that read 'Wow - are these things legal? I can't stop smiling and I nearly high fived a complete stranger'.
