Product Description

On 20th July 2013 15-year-old Oxford schoolgirl Martha Fernback died suddenly after swallowing half a gram of MDMA powder, more widely known as ecstasy. Within hours her mother, Anne-Marie Cockburn, began to write down her feelings as a way to channel her shock and try to make sense of the tragic loss of her only child. From an early age Anne-Marie has used writing to try to make sense of her life. This recent tragedy propelled her out of the shadows and gave her the confidence to share her writing with the world. In this book we join her in real time on her shocking and agonising journey, as she deals with the impractical demands placed upon a grieving single parent, begins to cope with the realities of life on her own and faces up to a future she could never have predicted. From the moment Martha died, Anne-Marie recognised that she still had a future, a life to live. This revealing, emotional and, ultimately, uplifting book shows how she used the art of writing, combined with determined self-belief, to guide her during this terrible time.

5.0 out of 5 stars articulate and positive 26 Dec 2013
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Anne-Marie, I have just read your book and can't believe how you found the strength to express your thoughts and feelings in such a positive and articulate way. It was heart-breaking to read and to remember Martha as the beautiful little girl with the huge, luminous saucer-like blue eyes and such beautiful curls. I can picture her on the day she was born, your precious little twig, and then giggling in a baby bouncer from the door, running around our house wearing fairy wings, and playing in the wendy house you made together from a huge cardboard box. Years later, she was entertaining our children and building brio... I think of you often and am so glad to know, through your writing, how you are coping and that you are so determined to embrace your future in such a positive way, surrounded by friends. Beautiful Martha would be so proud of you and of your book and I am sure it will bering others strength too. xx

5.0 out of 5 stars Beautiful and compelling 1 Jan 2014
By Tweeze
Format:Paperback
A compelling account of what happens when the unimaginable happens. This heartbreaking yet uplifting journal documents the days and weeks following a single mother's loss of her 15-year-old daughter, her only child. From happy reminiscences of carefree moments together to the nightmareish details of the immediate aftermath and the practicalities of arranging a suitable teenage send-off, this is a survivor's story of hope vs grief, with hope coming out on top. An inspiration for those dealing with grief, and a valuable perspective for teenagers taking responsibility for their own choices, this book is beautifully written and impossible to put down.

5.0 out of 5 stars Written with such emotion 5 Jan 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is one of the most emotional books I have ever read, being a mother drew me into the feelings that Anne-Marie wrote about, she manages to put into words every possible emotion. When I read the funeral and the Birthday party I could not stop crying. So If you like a book that makes you feel every part of what you are reading this is a must.
My heart goes out to Anne-Marie and that she adjusts to her "Normal " life again soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars From the heart 26 April 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
A truely amazing book, and beautiful daughter, thank you Anne-Marie, your book has helped me understand how the explain more to my daughter about the nasty world of drugs, and helped me to be more of an listening mum to my daughter's words. I wish you all the luck with helping young people understand the horrors that are out there in the big wide world.

5.0 out of 5 stars Really touched the heart. 16 April 2014
By R. Dang
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Fantastic book that is a privilege to read as it gives such a rare and intimate insight into the mind of an acutely grieving parent. As someone working with dying people and their families all the time it really gives me that depth of understanding like no other. Priceless book. I understand that Anne-Marie has a humanist worldview, but I pray that God will strengthen her through her ordeal and that her heart will come to a place of peace.
