Review

"'The writing is magic. I felt joy at every word.' John Carey '44 Things is a response to the life that goes on around me as I live and work with my family at home... Forty four pieces of different kinds of writing that have one thing in common - they are written by this woman, me, who lives at this time in her life fully and imaginatively sustained by what goes on in her domestic world.' Kirsty Gunn"

By L. Bretherton TOP 1000 REVIEWER VINE™ VOICE
Not so sure what this collection of 'things' is meant to be, really. It's almost as though the publisher told her to produce a couple of hundred pages and she was a bit stuck for ideas, so just wrote down some random thoughts. Much of it centres around the author's decision to spend time at home with her two small children, instead of pursuing a career in writing. So she wrote about it. But it's full of twee, "Alistair sipped his wine slowly" type moments which are frankly as dull as ditchwater. And while it might be lovely lovely for Lesley and Alistair and all the others to read about themselves, for a reader like me, it's not. The one obvious element which is missing is humour. Nothing in this book will raise a laugh, or even a smile. Don't waste your time.

I agree with the previous reviewer. This is hardly original and has a "look at me I'm so unusual" tone to it which is smug and off putting.

I have to disagree with the other two reviewers as i actually thought it was a great book. I thought what a great idea to write 44 things instead of a novel. I think its great that she would rather be a mother than a writer and only write about the things that concern her. i do think she has put a lot of thought into this and the end has clearly paid off. Its such an interesting thing to do and also an inspiration, one i plan to use for when i turn 30 next year.

I think this book will only appeal to those who have an understanding towards creativity and the idea of writing notes here and there. I would rate this book and not read the other reviews as they clearly don't appreciate good writing by a write writer. Yes, a great writer.
