4.0 out of 5 stars The North Hollywood Bank Robbery, 12 Mar 2004

This review is from: 44 Minutes [DVD] [2003] [Region 1] [US Import] [NTSC] (DVD)
You may remember the amazing news footage of a few years back of the Bank of America Robbery in North Hollywood, California, where two gunmen, dressed head to foot in body armour and armed with AK47 assault rifles had a shoot out with the police in which over 1500 rounds of ammunition were fired. This is the story of that incident. The 44 minutes of the robbery itself are re-created with great authenticity and it really is a case of truth being stranger than fiction, with the police having to go to a local gun shop to buy better guns, because the bullets from their pistols are just bouncing off the gunmens body armour. The film is worth watching for this segment alone.Unfortunately the section leading up to the robbery itself, where we meet the main protagonists in the shoot out and the scene is set, gets the full-on hollywood schmaltz treatment, which greatly detracts from the film as a whole, hence only 4 stars, but for an amazing last hour this film is definitely worth watching.

4.0 out of 5 stars Not bad... or as far as made for TV films go: OSCAR WINNING, 30 Jun 2011

This review is from: 44 Minutes [2003] [DVD] (DVD)
This is an obviously a made for TV film that turns out to be a pretty good watch. SOme of you may have seen the real life footage of the incident this film is based on - a bank job that went wrong and resulted in a running gun battle in the streets of North Holwood, where two balaclava clad men dressed in body armour turned half the forces polic cars to scrap metal with two AK47 loaded with armour piercing rounds.

The gun battled lasted for 44 minutes (hence the title) and famously, the cops where so out-gunned by the two masked morons that they had to raid a local gun shop for ammo and more fire power.

Once it gets going the film is quite an entertaining watch - don't expect much, just lots of gun fire. Make that lots and lots of gun fire. But it's amazing how satisfying a few big names... well, one big name and two medium sized names plus close ups of men firing AKs turns out to be. I was surprised to see there were no extras (its seems a subject that would be perfect for real life footage and follow up documentaries) but I guess extra expenditure and effort are bottom of the list when it comes to TV movies.

Overall - 7 out of 8 from me. Seen a lot worse, and as far as TV films goes it's Oscar-winning.

By the way, if you want a truly excellent bank heist film to watch heres one:The Town [Blu-ray][Region Free]

This film is really good and all the acters do an amazing job.
Its based on a true story and all the acters are very humble on how they come across. Good fun to watch and unbelieveable ending. Buy this you will be happy with it for sure
