When I first bought this book it went straight on the shelf with all the other books which remained pristine due to their lack of use. Then one day when searching for something to cook for a dinner party I came across it again and literally have not stopped using it since. (You can tell by the pages being stuck together - the previous edition was paperback but with a plastic wipe-clean cover - with good reason) What is so special about this book is that it really is what it says on the cover; however it is NOT simple, tasteless meals but true imagination so often lacking from our celebrity chefs who seem to overcomplicate everything and have dozens of ingredients. I defy anyone not to come up with a tasty wholesome meal from the contents of even the most sparsely stocked kitchen - go on I challenge you - My favourite - Chicken with Serrano ham and lemon - butter and seasoning and that's it stick it in the oven - dinner guests were amazed at out gourmet cooking!!!

5.0 out of 5 stars Your Mother Cooks Socks in Hell... 20 Nov 2008
Format:Hardcover
Seriously, this book changed my life. Before reading this I was a nine stone weakling who couldn't cook, get a date or wire a plug. Now, I'm a 13 stone weakling who can cook a mean curried cauliflower soup, a spicy fish and tomato stew, a red onion & goat's cheese tart and a whole slew of other fancy dishes but still can't seem to get a date or wire a plug. What did you expect - it's only a cook book! If you want your life changing, read Alain De Botton or something.

Truth is the recipes in this book are so ridiculously easy and straightforward that they should've called the book "Basic Cooking for Simpletons" and that would've summed up my starting level of culinary knowledge neatly. The book even encourages you to use packets and jars - so don't be afraid if you can't rustle up an acceptable pasta sauce from a random vegetable - this book really wants you to cut corners but not, I must admit, at the expense of flavour. And don't be fooled into thinking that because it's only three or four ingredients it's going to be 400 variations based around cheese on toast - there's plenty of decent world cuisine in here too: Middle Eastern, North African, Greek, Chinese and more besides.

I've also done the Jamie Oliver thing too and passed some recipes onto my wretched single friends. Hopefully their days of squalid everything-in-one-pan cooking are soon to be over.

Highly recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars Get cooking!! 3 Nov 2007
By Miss T
Format:Hardcover
I saw this book on my best friends kitchen shelf. Every time I'm in her kitchen I look for a recipe to add to my long list of recipes. I've finally decided to buy my own copy. I like the fact that I don't need a massive list of ingredients to create really tasty food. I defy anyone not to find this book a revolution in gourmet cooking.
