This is a powerful film, which I take to be an allegory for the pain of modernisation and change. There are many themes and layers of symbolism throughout this film, one could spend hours trying to figure out what, if anything, each means. Rather it is in its entirity where the film makes sense, capturing the lives of two or three generations of Soviet citizens brought up knowing only collectivism and communism being dumped into the new capitalist economy, some surviving better than others. Those that do prosper live a life of lies. The feeling of a loss of direction and the loss of purpose in life is almost palpable.
Visually the film is stunning and the soundtrack complements the images perfectly. It was one of those films that you just cannot stop thinking about for days after. The pace of the film is slow but inconsistent, never quite allowing the viewer to settle. There is hope and humanity in the film too.
Be warned, this is really not a film to watch if your taste is for mainstream Holywood style movies.
