Reviews

Complete second series of the US television comedy about a group of alien explorers who assume human shape in order to learn more about earth's civilisation. Landing in the town of Rutherford, Ohio, the group soon displays a charming innocence in their reaction to human society. In this series, Dick (John Lithgow) has to escape from the basement and stop Evil Dick from impregnating all the town's women, the Solomons attend a sci-fi convention to set the record straight about life on other worlds, and Dick is asked to direct a high school production of 'Romeo and Juliet', with disastrous results. Includes all 26 episodes: 'See Dick Continue to Run'; 'See Dick Continue to Run, Continued'; 'Hotel Dick'; 'Big Angry Virgin From Outer Space'; 'Much Ado About Dick'; 'Dick the Vote'; 'Fourth and Dick'; 'World's Greatest Dick'; 'My Mother the Alien'; 'Gobble, Gobble, Dick, Dick'; 'Dick Jokes'; 'Jolly Old St Dick'; 'Proud Dick'; 'Romeo and Juliet and Dick'; 'Guilty as Dick'; 'Dick on One Knee'; 'Same Old Song and Dick'; 'I Brake For Dick'; 'Dick Behaving Badly'; 'Dickmalion'; 'Sensitive Dick'; 'Will Work For Dick'; 'Fifteen Minutes of Dick'; 'Dick and the Single Girl'; 'A Nightmare on Dick Street (1)' and 'A Nightmare on Dick Street (2)'.

More of the blissfully funny adventures of the aliens living on earth disguised as an eccentric earth family. This second series has some of the funniest episodes, including one of my very favourites, 'Gobble, Gobble, Dick' in which the Solomons experience their first Thanksgiving, and Harry is smitten by Mrs Dubchek's daughter Vicky. The part where Harry and Vicky have a romantic tryst in the kitchen, and end up doing very peculiar things with the turkey carcass, is absolutely hilarious. 'Jolly Old Saint Dick' where they experience their first Christmas, is also very funny, with Sally getting a job as a Christmas gift wrapper, and redistributing the gifts to different customers. And then there's the one where Harry accidentaly becomes an environmental protestor, and ends up stading for election, and the one where Dick gets the sack and has to go and work in a fast food outlet, and - oh well, they're all very funny. All the cast are superb, the scripts are hilarious, everything works beautifuly. This series 2 set includes a rather pointless bonus disc on which you can see the last 2 episdoes of the series again, only in 3d (glasses are provided). If you are the kind of person who gets excited about 3d you will enjoy this, though personally it leaves me cold.

Just be warned - this is a region 1 DVD package, so you need a multi-region player, or one that at least plays U.S discs. I guess this is why it is such a reasonably priced set.

Series 2 starts right where season 1 left off, with Dick (John Lithgow) trapped in an invisible shell by his 'identical replacement' as High Commander. From here on in, the series just gets funnier and funnier.

The 4 aliens (disguised in human form) continue to make one social faux pas after another as they try to blend in, adapt to and understand human society. Their attempts to deal with American Thanksgiving and local politics are hilarious. As per my review of season 1 I don't want to include any 'spoilers', so I will just say once again, don't be put off be the sci-fi element, it is more a comedy of human and 'nonplussed' alien interactions and just gets better with each episode. Also their attempts to get used to their human form gives some really funny moments. There is some continuity of characters from series 1 so the episodes do have a bit of a thread running through them and I did prefer to watch them in order.

The primary 'alien' characters are played by John Lithgow, Kristen Johnson, French Stewart (how the hell does he maintain that squint?) and Joseph Gordon Levitt, with Jane Curtin providing the human 'love interest' and foil for John Lithgows character. It is difficult to pick my favourite from these, as they all give genuinely funny performances. The supporting cast also continue to provide extra depth and humour to the story.

What is not to like about Third Rock from the Sun.

Genuinely funny with some great acting from John Lithgow.

Will rewatch many times.

I have already written a review for the 3rd season of this series so there is really nothing more to add. It is funny, original and inventive, with all-round excellent performances from the whole cast. I can watch the series again and again and never get bored.

This comedy appeals to all ages and John Lithgow is a genius in his portrayal of the alien. The rest of the cast are also perfect in their individual characters.
