For me, crime fiction has to have enough ring of truth that I can imagine the circumstances really happening. Otherwise, the book is simply a fantasy, and my pleasure depends on the symbolism, metaphors and issues explored. 3rd Degree didn't work well for me from either perspective.
If you have read and enjoyed 1st to Die and 2nd Chance, you should read this book because there are important developments for the four women in the Women's Murder Club. Otherwise, if you pick up the fourth book in the series when it comes out, you will find yourself a little lost.
The book opens with a bang when Homicide Detective Lindsay Boxer observes a home explode during her jog. There are more explosive events ahead as the book chronicles Lindsay's efforts (abetted by her women friends) to locate the terrorists behind a series of attacks on those who have gained at the expense of others and have upheld law and order. Because of the magnitude of the events, the whole antiterrorist forces of the United States become involved. Lindsay finds herself being attracted to one of them. At the same time, there's trouble in Jill's marriage.
The problems with the book come from the story's development of the terrorist theme. The terrorists just don't seem like real people. They are like cardboard drawings that haven't even been cut out of the cardboard so that they can stand two-dimensionally on their own. The way they work together and their motivations didn't ring true with me either.
Mr. Patterson and Mr. Gross also didn't seem to develop the four female characters more than the minimum to build the story and draw your interest in reading a fourth book in the series. These four women could have made for wonderful characters if the authors weren't so plot and action obsessed.
After you finish this book, think about whether your time is spent on the right priorities.

First and foremost, i would like to say that this book is great. Secondly, it was a really worth the wait. Thirdly, with hindsight, it was even great waiting for it!
Many people seem content to rubbish JP's short chapters, but these are what make his book's such a thrill to read. 3rd Degree is an ever changing, fast paced thriller and this is due to the effectiveness of short chapters... Don't you find it amazing that the simple turn of a page, can have you in Berkeley one second and in Susie's the next?
The story line was classic, a main character dies and there is love interest. Typical of most best sellers, right? But this one is different... but you should read it to find out for yourselves, you won't regret it!
This book, like all his others, was a great read... bring on the next one JP!!!!

I have read several of James Patterson's stories and loved them all. I read this one too and loved it. The story is just wonderful. It kept me on the edge throughout the read.
3rd Degree will stick in your mind as a fast paced novel from the opening pages until the end. The plot begins when a townhouse goes up in flames and a note is discovered at the site. It became a controversial issue because no one could say for certain whether it is an arson/terrorist act or accident. But when more violence erupts in the city pointing to the August Spies group, it became clear who was behind the arson. In this high-geared investigative novel, the characters who featured in the other stories in this series (1st To Die and 2nd Chance) also featured here. There is the San Francisco Chronicle reporter Cindy Thomas, there is Lieutenant Lindsay Boxer of the San Francisco police, Medical Examiner Claire Washburn, and Assistant District Attorney Jill Bernhardt.
In what initially appeared to be for political reasons, it turns out to be something more when the Women's Murder Club gets to the bottom of it all. With an effective use of dialogue, succinct narrative, amazing plot and outstanding setting, this book stood up to Patterson's standards and the bestselling quality that we all love.You won't regret picking this novel up for an interesting read.Also recommended:TRIPLE AGENT DOUBLE CROSS,DISCIPLES OF FORTUNE, HONEYMOON

James Patterson - Womens Murder Club series
This book, along with the other 9 from the series is full of suspense, drama and thrill. I love all the books - you will enjoy if you like James Patterson as a writer.
