"Great for getting your power up - there's no cheating a turbo trainer. It's always nice to smash it and if you put the work in then you won't be suffering out on the rides."

Mark Cavendish - 2011 World Road Race Champion

A big favourite with sportive riders, 3LC Road Race is a turbo session designed to improve your all-around cycling ability. The session simulates situations cyclists often face during road races and sportive rides. You'll learn to climb fast and efficiently, sustain lone efforts, hold your pace towards the end of a race and produce a sprint to beat your mates!

If you're short on time, the weather is foul or you just want a structured session, you can jump on your turbo and ride alongside Olympic Champion/Team Sky Pro Pete Kennaugh and receive valuable encouragement from Tour de France Star Mark Cavendish as they take your threshold to new levels.

Former British Criterium Champion Rob Holden is also on hand to motivate and keep you focused on correct body positioning and smooth pedal strokes while moving at the tempo of the peloton. You'll cover the moves, get in the all-important break, climb with the leaders and (if that's not enough) attack, lead out and sprint to the finish! (Duration 60 minutes)

3LC Road Race will help you:

- Increase your aerobic fitness

- Improve your VO2 Max

- Improve your lactate threshold

- Adapt your body to cadence changes

- Strengthen your body to endure the intensities of a lead out and that all important sprint finish!

"Whatever your ability or preferred discipline, 3LC Road Race is the session to choose for improved all round ability. We'll take you through a tough race - training your body and mind to stay strong through to the finish."

Peter Kennaugh Snr - 3LC Head Coach

I returned to cycling relatively late in life and only managed an enjoyable weekend run on road plus Forest of Dean on MB, and only if weather permitted. So thoughts turned to a turbo trainer. If I was going to get fit and lose weight and improve my cycling then I had to try and be consistent so Turbo was duly ordered, complete with free DVD. Excitement soon turned to disappointment as I pedalled away watching a very scenic French view accompanied with some pretty weird music. Is that it!? Talk about deflated. I felt I had wasted money on a piece of kit that would languish forever in the corner of the garage alongside the paint stick and bit of plastic that would come in handy one day.
However following Mark Cavendish on Twitter one day I tweeted him asking for his DVD recommendations. Amazingly I got a reply from 3LC with a link to their site and recommendation for me and immediately ordered the Road Race one. On arrival I immediately put it in the DVD player, set the bike and turbo up in the lounge in front of the big screen (luckily I had discovered the wife would be out shopping for a couple of hours!)got drink and towel at the ready and away to go! Starting off with a gentle warm up things move along very nicely with the coaches advising what cadence you should be aiming for. These figures are also displayed on the screen and you can keep pace with the Manx riders going through the same experience. I would recommend easing the tension on the turbo so you can reach the end of course and gradually build up as you get used to the workouts. Half way through you will be sweating profusely but you will be enjoying it! You will hear Cav encouraging you to 'keep that cadence going', and find yourself answering him! The end is best left for you to savour yourself but lets just say its tough!

I have been cycling regularly for the last year, but with the UK's inclement weather and my general wimpiness, have not been out on my bike for a few months. Having read the reviews, and being a fan of Mark Cavendish generally, I thought I would give it a whirl. I was not disappointed. The format is easy to follow. The introduction lays out what you need to know to be able to ride along. The riders have a good banter as they ride and Mark is more than willing to chip in. On top of that Mark and Peter Snr keep you motivated by putting the workout in the context of a real race scenario, culminating in a sprint finish. I must admit, the shout from Peter Snr "You've just passed under the flame rouge" gives me goosebumps every time. During the session you also get tips on how frequently you need to use the DVD and the need for protein drinks to aid recovery. In addition, there are 5 10 minute yoga sessions to increase flexibility and aid recovery. This is perhaps the most complete cycling related DVD out there. Buy it- you won't be disappointed

I recently purchased a turbo trainer and found it hard to motivate myself to use it, that was until i discovered this DVD. I'm 15 stone, 5'9" and I'm not very fit. Some comments on the 3LC DVD's spoke about how this is a DVD for real serious riders, which to a degree is true, however, it is also very suitable for a beginner rider like myself. On my first session with the DVD, i cycled for just 30 of the 60 minute program, i adjusted the program and didn't increase the gears when the video instructed, I'm now doing 45 minutes, increasing the gears and in just a few weeks of regular use, can see great improvement. Part of me is holding back from completing the full 60 minute's just because it gives me a target to aim for which i find motivating but it wont end there, i can make the session more difficult as i get fitter by just increasing the gears. To summarise, if your not very fit, there are many adjustments you can make in order for this DVD to work for you and if you link it up with a cadence sensor and Garmin forerunner, you can monitor your miles, calories burned, cadence, its brilliant, I love it and today I have ordered another 4 3LC DVD's which cover different training sessions. I'd thoroughly recommend this to anyone wanting to get fit or just get better.

The problem with the turbo is that, unlike cycling on the road, we need entertaining; I've tried setting up in front of the television or plugging in an iPod, all with the inevitable consequence of feeling like using an indoor trainer is a chore rather than something to enjoy.

Three Legs Cycling, aka 3LC.tv, offer indoor training videos that not only entertain the static cyclist, but also motivate, improve fitness and work on technique, all whist using the turbo.

The Road Race begins with a decent 10 minute warm up before moving on to simulate the conditions you would typically expect in a cycling race.

I must admit that I was expecting something slightly different, I hadn't seen any demos, so I was surprised to see that the video is filmed entirely in a studio, with a selection of pros, elite and club riders cycling on their own turbos while a coach presents the session, flanked by Mark Cavendish who offers advice every now and again.

The visual concept on paper might not sound too spectacular, especially as some rival companies focus their sessions on archive film of classic road cycling, so in comparison it might all sound a bit dull watching younger fitter and more efficient cyclists on their turbo trainers, but I promise you that this isn't the case.

Toward the bottom of the screen you will notice a 'Now and Next' graphic, indicating the current recommended Cadence* [3LC.tv tend to concentrate on cadence rather than power to judge effort] and a RPE Level [Rating of Perceived Effort], this works very well as I can prepare for the next effort without any nasty surprises.

*Don't worry if you don't have a cadence sensor, I don't, use RPE instead and judge your own effort.
