· Little can be said about The Sound Of Philadelphia or Philadelphia International Records without mentioning The Three Degrees. This trio may have had more than 12 different women represent the group so far, but they remain one of the most memorable female vocal acts of the last 40+ years.
· In 1979, The Three Degrees released their second album for Ariola Records, 3D, produced by Grammy Award winner Giorgio Moroder fresh from winning an Academy Award for his full movie score on Midnight Express and fellow Grammy Award and Academy Award winner Harold Faltermeyer.
· The album featured such hits as the fantastic driving beat of the US Dance hits JUMP THE GUN and SET ME FREE and a UK Top Ten hit, the hugely popular sweet and soulful, MY SIMPLE HEART. Other notable singles include the gorgeous funky Earth, Wind & Fire inspired ballad STARLIGHT and WITHOUT YOU.
· BBR is proud present this newly re-mastered and beautifully re-packaged expanded edition of THREE D, complete with extensive liner notes featuring interviews with group members and Ariola Records President Robin Blanchflower along with added bonus tracks.

This album from `79 was the girls' follow up to the highly successful`New Dimensions' which included some of the Philly trio's biggest hits such as `Giving Up Giving In' and `Woman In Love'.
With Giorgio Moroder again at the helm, the album follows a similar Euro disco formula, although some of the songs and arrangements have a slightly harder, rockier feel. The blend of driving synthesizer beats and electric guitars works particularly well on opener `Jump The Gun' featuring Valerie and `Red Light' featuring Sheila - this track along with`Set Me Free', which is a worthy companion to Donna Summer's `I Feel Love', are for me the real gems in this collection and could have been huge had Ariola had the foresight to release them as singles in the UK.
Although 3D does include the sing-along hit`My Simple Heart',the album didn't quite match the success of its predecessor and failed to get the profile is justly deserved. Maybe this was down to the wrong choice of single releases, changes at the record label or a backlash against disco and the nation's ongoing love affair with punk at the time ?
Whatever the reason, this welcome release from Big Break records is long overdue and well worth revisiting.

3D is my favourite of the 2 albums Giorgio Moroder did with The Three Degrees.
While I love "New Dimensions", the much more successful album of the the two, I found it a little too "camp" and "draggy". I like the harder disco style of this album, with slight rock influences coming through.
On 3D Moroder enlisted Harold Faltermeyer to assist in production duties, as he was heavy in demand by this time and simply couldn't do it all alone.
Jump The Gun - Massive UK hit, and a late 70s disco classic. I love the chord changes, just brilliant.
Red Light - Maybe my favourite song on this album. This song mixes in from Jump The Gun beautifully, and the chord changes at the end of the chorus make the song for me. The vocal reverbs remind me of Stock Aitken Waterman's production style.
Set Me Free - This is easily the most "Moroder" sounding song on the album, electronic basslines, fully electronic production and a typically Moroder song. Love it.
Starlight - An R'n'B ballad, and it's nice. While it's not my favourite, the girls vocals stand out and it's a very classy affair.
My Simple Heart - A big UK hit, and a great song. Some describe this as a ballad but it's not. It has a light disco beat, faster than Donna Summer's "Love To Love You Baby". It's more mid tempo disco pop around the same speed as Rick Astley's "Never Gonna Give You Up" with 100% Euro chords.
Without You - Another slower tempo moment but a nice one.
Body Check - The album's closing track, and it's a frantic Disco beats is an all on the floor smash. It's the one song on the album that reminds me a little of "New Dimensions" but it's so much better.
Also included are bonus tracks comprised of B side "Hot Summer Night" along with single and 12" mixes of the singles.
What a great release, I'd been waiting for this for years!! One of Moroder's finest moments, GET IT TODAY!!

BBR records really spoil us and I am so grateful for these CD's issued with bonus tracks including 7" single versions, B-Sides and 12" versions. I was unaware that there was a longer 12" version of "My Simple Heart". The 12" single simply said "full length version" and all these years I assumed it was the same as the album version which is roughly 45 seconds longer than the single. So to now discover through a bonus track on this CD that there is an even longer 12" version was fantastic, particularly as it is the best version. Over 5 minutes of the Bugatti & Musker-written "My Simple Heart", it doesn't get much better than that for me. The sound quality is also awesome, so I am extremely pleased with just that one track already. For me it would be worth 5 stars even as a one track CD. The rest of the album is superb and the inclusion of the 12" mixes of "Bodycheck", "Set Me Free" and "Jump The Gun" is the icing on the cake. Giorgio Moroder and the Three Degrees were really a perfect match. Put their output into the hands of BBR records and you get another winning combination. Highly recommended.
