Product Description

Synopsis

In this unprecedented master course you'll learn the realistic 3D creature painting techniques pioneered by master texture artist Bill Fleming. In fact Bill reveals countless techniques he has previously only disclosed to Hollywood studios to help them perfect their feature film creatures. To illustrate these techniques Bill walks you through every step in recreating the head textures of his famed Freaky Frank monster, star of the Halloween move "Creeps." You'll paint this hideous horror's textures step-by-step, in exact detail from the tiny skin pores and creepy scars to the eerie, intricately detailed iris texture that strikes fear in the hearts of viewers. No detail is overlooked. You'll also master the science of creating ultra-detailed Specularity and Diffusion maps that breath life into your 3D creatures in a manner worthy of "Big Screen" feature films. In fact, you'll even learn Bill's incredible technique for making skin appear soft and pliable for that ultra-realism, which will leave your viewers swearing your creatures are real. It's truly amazing. If you want to create creature textures that make your creations leap off the screen you must have 3D Texture Workshop in your 3D arsenal.

5.0 out of 5 stars excellent, 19 Oct 2004
This review is from: 3D Texture Workshop: Painting Hollywood Creatures Textures v. 1 (Paperback)
This paperback book comes with a CD containing all the necessary templates and so on to help you work through the exercises in the book, which takes you step by step through the creation of Freaky Franks (the guy on the cover) texture.
It covers creating complete textures including bump maps for his skin, eyes & teeth.

Very clear supporting text and heavily illustrated throughout - I would thoroughly recommend this book.
If you are comfortable with your paint program, I would say a beginner could follow this tutorial & get impressive results.

Bill Fleming works through the tutorials using Photoshop, but you could comfortably follow along with 3d programs like BodyPaint3dr2 (my paint program of choice) or lower end programs such as PSP9 or Photoshop Elements.
If you want to improve your texturing skills, this is a good book to add to your collection.

5.0 out of 5 stars Realistic texturing class for the rest of us, 27 Nov 2002
By L. Amarakoon "Lee A" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: 3D Texture Workshop: Painting Hollywood Creatures Textures v. 1 (Paperback)
Where was this book, when I needed it for my thesis. lol

The whole book is a do-it-yourself class on its own. The steps are laid out very clearly, how you use photoshop for doing textures. I really like the how the book included the character files in obj, dxf, c3d, lwo and 3ds. So that anyone could view the model in any program they use. The book covers the face, the eyes, the gums, the tongue and the teeth in excellent detail. I went throught the book twice with every page being extremely helpful.

What did this book do for me as a Maya user, it broke me away from methods I had learned at RIT and suggested more simpler ones without making bumpmaps in the hypershade. Now you can do it all in one texture, and it looks amazing.

This book has been a great edition to my 3D collection. I look forward to more of his work in the future. Whats volume 2 going to be about?

5.0 out of 5 stars GET IT, YOUR MODELS WILL THANK YOU!, 23 Jun 2003
By Peter Sussi - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: 3D Texture Workshop: Painting Hollywood Creatures Textures v. 1 (Paperback)
This is a fantastic book for getting you started with realistic skin texturing. Over the years, I've collected numerous books on the fine art of skin texturing. This is one of the finest and complete book around. Though I do combine this with some other techniques, this book brought a lot to the table. It also has a great section on eyes! The book is easy to follow with tons of big pictures with short paragraphs. My biggest let down was the fact that they were going to come out with a book on clothing painting. Unfourtunatally, it was cancelled.

5.0 out of 5 stars finally a book that covers organic textures step by step, 31 Aug 2002
By "bluefable" - Published on Amazon.com
This review is from: 3D Texture Workshop: Painting Hollywood Creatures Textures v. 1 (Paperback)
With a million and one books on 3D model creation its good to finally see one that covers the other half of the equation -textures!

Bill takes you step by step through the process of texturing his Freaky Frank model, unravelling the mystery of organic texture creation with ease.

All required files are included (unlike the first print release)
although I found it a little strange that the cover photo was created in Deep Paint, while the tutorials use Photoshop and the CD includes a demo copy of BodyPaint. Not that it matters I suppose as any paint program can be used with the book provided you have a basic understanding of your software.

Its a great read and offers lots of hints and tips for realistic textures. I look forward to volume two of this unique series.
