An excellent introduction to the art of stereographic film-making. 90% is highly readable, while the more hardcore technicalities are made digestible with a wealth of illustrations - or else you can just skim the hard bits to the next chapter!
3D has been around for decades, most famously during the 50s, and again in the 80s when polarised spectacles made 3D colour possible. But only now, with the opportunities offered by digital image techniques, is it really coming into its own. Avatar has made everybody sit up and re-assess stereography's commercial potential. A 3D film will take three times as much at the box office as its 2D equivalent. A compelling statistic. Meanwhile 100 Hz flat screen TVs are now commonplace, and '3D capable'. So much so that 2010 will see the launch of several dedicated 3D TV channels, with 3D sport leading the way, as it did with HD.
Mastering stereography is a daunting task, and most certainly NOT a case of simply strapping two cameras together. It is a discipline full of surprising rules, many counter-intuitive, many restrictive, that have to be followed to maintain the illusion of depth and not give the audience a headache. It turns out for instance that a gorgeous blue sky will simply look flat because it lacks texture! "3D is an experience" like colour, or the illusion of movement, and needs to be gently coaxed shot-by-shot.
The book is surprisingly thorough, taking us from planning a 3D storyboard to the (scary!) problems involved in editing. The enclosed DVD has 3D stills and movies, After Effects and other project files, and even some useful software. Plenty to get your teeth into. It is clearly intended for the professional, but the keen hobbyist (you'd have to be very keen!) will also love this, as will any producer, director or editor trying to get a decent grasp of an area they are bound to encounter soon.
Destined to become the 3D Bible, this is a book that will be a reference on any 3D set, and is a real bargain. If you're expecting to embark on a 3D project, how can you NOT buy this...?
