Product Description

Manufacturer's Description

Shared Internet Access for Wireless and Wired Users

The 3Com ADSL Wireless 11g Firewall Router combines an ADSL modem, router, 802.11g wireless access point, four-port switch, and firewall to enable up to 253 total (128 wireless) users to economically and securely share a single ADSL connection. The high-speed routing engine easily handles large data transfers and Internet downloads, including those from multimedia applications.

The 11g ADSL router provides a high-speed, 54 Mbps wireless connection for users with 802.11g-equipped PCs and laptops. It is also backward-compatible with 802.11b wireless LAN equipment, preserving existing network investments. And the Wi-Fi compatible router interoperates with Wi-Fi-certified products from other vendors.

Advanced wireless security and multiple firewall features offer one of the industry's strongest levels of protection for the network. To shield wireless connections, the 11g gateway router implements 256-bit WPA encryption for maximum security, along with 40/64- & 128-bit WEP encryption for legacy clients. Stateful packet inspection firewall, hacker pattern detection, URL filtering, and other security features help protect the entire network from attacks and other Internet security risks.

4.0 out of 5 stars Does the job nicely, 20 Oct 2004
    By A Customer
I bought the OfficeConnect router to share my Bulldog ADSL connection. The unit itself is compact and is of a sturdy construction.

The initial set up was very easy and if your requirements aren't too unusual, you'll have it set up in minutes. The router is, as you would expect, cross-platform compatible so it plays nicely with the Mac OS X, Windows and Linux hosts on my network. The router's Web interface is good, and works in proper web browsers like Safari and Mozilla Firefox.

It is worth noting that whilst single TCP/UDP ports can be mapped to hosts on your network, it is not possible to open a *range* of ports without using 'port triggering', which is not appropriate for some applications. For me, this deficiency robs the router of a 5-star rating, but the wide majority of users will not consider this to be a limitation.

The wireless performance seems very good even in a mixed b/g environment. The router is situated on the ground floor of my house and has enough range to cover the two floors above and the garden without the need to resort to its 'long range' mode. WPA encryption was a doddle to set up (easier than WEP), just specify a password on the router and then enter it on each host that connects. WPA works fine with my PowerBook G4's Airport Extreme card, my iPAQ with Linksys WCF12 and also my partner's G3 iBook.

Overall, I'm impressed with this router - it's easy to set up, it's secure and it's a solid performer. I recommend it to network novices and experienced users alike. (...and no, I don't work for 3Com!)

4.0 out of 5 stars 3Com ADSL Wireless 54 Mbps Firewall Router, 22 Jul 2004
By Mr Ian Mather (Bury, Lancashire United Kingdom) - See all my reviews
An excellent product from a well respected manufacturer. The unit came very well packed with more than adequate documentation, backup CD's and connection leads. I must admit to being slightly confused about the switch-over from BT Broadband and identifying the exact type of service connection I had currently. Now I'm a professional in IT, so if I was a bit confused, others may really struggle. However, having tried the first option on the menu which didn't seem too happy, I moved to the second type and everything was fine. The setup menu on the IP address of the Router is excellent. Once the first PC was connected initially via the Ethernet cable to do the configuration, the setup of the wireless side was very simple. On connecting two other laptops with wireless cards, there was nothing else to do - just let the PC auto detect the card and then simply fire up IE - instant connection at 54 Mbps
    Great !

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent ADSL Firewall Router, 12 Jul 2004
    By A Customer
I reviewed several ADSL modem routers before finally choosing the 3CRWE754G72 model from 3Com, which also came with the 54Mbps wireless PC card, 3CRWE154G72 (unfortunately, not such a good product - driver problems!!). If you have a Broadband connection via your telephone line (for example, from BT), then you need a combined modem router like the 3CRWE754G72. The line from the telephone socket (or attached microfilter) known as RJ-11 connects to the back of the unit and then you use an ethernet cable (known as RJ-45) to connect to your PC. A word of warning, many ADSL routers (e.g. from Buffalo) provide only router functionality and are not combined modem routers, which you need if you get Broadband through your telephone line.

So, what's the product like? Well, it's excellent. Very easy to configure and use and has a whole host of features that you only need to use, if necessary. The web-based interface is intuitive and easy to navigate. If you use BT Broadband, use PPPoA for the Internet Connection Type, set VPI/VCI to 0/38, Encapsulation to 'VC MUX', check 'Dial on Demand', and set MTU to 1454. The Client IP Filters section allows you block URLs, which provides an extra layer of security over the default stateful firewall included as standard. The standard firewall blocks almost 100% of all common hacker attacks and this is demonstrated by the fact that attacks caught by ZoneAlarm drops from 1000s a week to zero!

Don't forget to register with 3Com to get access to their technical support and download area.
