Often drops WLAN and reports "Low" signal strength,

This review is from: 3Com OfficeConnect Wireless 11G (54Mbps) USB Adapter (Personal Computers)
I purchased this item in April 2006, thinking that since it came from a reputable manufacturer like 3Com it would provide excellent performance. Unfortunately, it appears I was mistaken. My particular adapter has a tendency to drop WLAN and almost constantly reports a "Low" signal strength. This despite being located only one meter away from a pair of laptops that always report "Excellent" signal strength from my router. I've also attempted placing my WiFi-enabled mobile phone behind this adapter to see if it was the location that was causing the problem, but my phone also reports an excellent signal. The router is 10 meters away, passes through only one wall, and is using a channel that none of the other access points in the area appear to be using.
I have tried the various drivers on 3Com's website, except for the one dated 16 May, 2006, since that one is meant only for units with serial numbers starting with 0300/. The latest drivers are dated 22 April, 2005 and do not fix the issues mentioned earlier.

Keeps dropping WLAN and then doesn't recognise it without reinstall!,

Thought the first item was faulty but the replacement also keeps dropping the WLAN that my internal WLAN of the laptops logs onto without any probs whatsoever ... I assume that there are flaws in the design, as I still have the same problem: it connects to my WLAN for about 1-2 seconds when first installed and then doesn't recognise it after it has initially dropped it. So after 4-5 de- & reinstalls, this had to go back as faulty, so do purchase the item bearing that in mind!

Good Item,
This review is from: 3Com OfficeConnect Wireless 11G (54Mbps) USB Adapter (Personal Computers)
I bought this to provide a wireless connection to my BT Voyager router principally because it runs with all versions of Windows and the OS on the PC I was adding to the network is Windows ME. The equivalent BT wireless adapter does not run with 98, 98SE or ME.
No problem getting it up and running once I worked out where to enter the network key code. The 3Com software interface looks a bit complicated to begin with but the "Help" function is excellent and clearly explains each field. Updated drivers can be downloaded from the 3Com website. Note that, while the adapter will function with USB1, you will only get optimum performance if your PC has USB2
