Book Description

'For a long while Beowulf leaned on the blood-stained sword; his heart was pounding. A man with the strength of thirty! Slayer of Grendel and slayer of the sea-wolf! A hero without equal in this middle-world!' The story of Beowulf was written down as an epic poem in Anglo-Saxon England. It recounts the heroic struggles of one man against supernatural monsters. Kevin Crossley-Holland's retelling unleashes the excitement in this tale of the triumph of good over evil, while unforgettable illustrations from Charles Keeping capture every brooding moment and explosive episode.

Crossley-Holland tells old (folk) tales better than anyone else alive (The Guardian)

The striking quality of these classic poems is such that they still offer excitement and intensity for today's young readers with Keeping's unique interpretation providing a marvellous way into the poetry. (Dave Chant, Carousel)

Really good translation. I love his use of language and imagery. Very useful as a model for creative writing.

I bought this on Kindle, but the text is not scaleable and appears very small on my Paperwhite. The book's a great introduction to Beowulf for younger readers, but get the printed edition.
