About the Author

Dan C. Marinescu was a Professor of Computer Science at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana from 1984 till 2001 when he joined the Computer Science Department at the University of Central Florida. He has held visiting faculty positions at IBM T. J. Watson Research Center, Yorktown Heights, New York; Institute of Information Sciences, Beijing; Scalable Systems Division of Intel Corporation; Deutsche Telecom; and INRIA Rocquancourt in France. In 2012 he was a Fulbright Professor at UTFSM (Universidad Tecnica Federico Santa Maria) in Valparaiso, Chile. His research interests cover parallel and distributed systems, cloud computing, scientific computing, and quantum computing and quantum information theory. He has published more than 220 papers in refereed journals and conference proceedings in these areas and authored three books. In 2007 he delivered the Boole Lecture at University College Cork, the school where George Boole taught from 1849 till his death in 1864. Dan Marinescu was the principal investigator of several grants from the National Science Foundation. In 2008 he was awarded a Earnest T.S. Walton fellowship from the Science Foundation of Ireland.

This book on Cloud Computing is the first I read with pleasure. The chapters all make sense to me, and the author is not shying away to give a solid technical foundation to what he describes and explains.
The too frequent pitfall of Cloud Computing books is that they specify and describe in formal terms, and show adequate system-level schemes, but avoid technical details, and do not provide in-depth technical explanations, maybe because these call for a multi-disciplinary engineering background.

Dan Marinescu's book is clearly giving engineers deeper understanding for the rationale and parameters of the systems they have to use as a very opaque black box: Cloud systems, big data analytics.
A 360 degree view of the subject is presented, not ommitting any of the key aspects, like security and privacy protection.
Note that the policy references are mostly from the US. The EU initiatives on Cloud Computing such as the ETSI-led Cloud Standards Coordination and its report to the European Commission to be published in December 2013 may have to be included in the next releases of the book.

A very good read I am happy to recommend!

With a title like Cloud Computing: Theory and Practice, this book sounds like it is a reference for a general audience, providing a general introduction to what cloud computing is all about.

Author Dan Marinescu, Ph.D is a computer science professor at the University of Central Florida, and the book is written for the college level reader, who has a strong interest in cloud computing; combined with an equally strong background in mathematics and statistics.

The book starts by taking a broad approach to the topic, rather than just jumping into cloud computing details. Chapters 1 and 2 detail computer networks in general, and then gets into parallel and distributed computing systems. Already in chapter 2, the book gets into the mathematics of cloud computing, and details cloud issues such as how the causality of local events can be derived from the process history and the transitivity of the causal relationship.

In chapter 3, the book gets into specific about the cloud, with an overview and comparison of Amazon, Microsoft and Google cloud initiatives.

From a security perspective, chapter 9 details the specifics of cloud security. It provides a high-level overview of the top concerns for cloud users and those designing cloud-based systems and various other cloud security risks.

For those looking for a more basic overview of cloud computing, Cloud Computing: Concepts, Technology & Architecture is the best book on the topic.

As to Cloud Computing: Theory and Practice it's an excellent resource for those tasked with developing and architecting sophisticated cloud systems and applications. The book also details how to integrate CDN (content delivery networks) into the cloud.

About half of the book includes advanced mathematics that may either be irrelevant or incomprehensible for most readers.

With that, many cloud initiatives have failed since the designers really believed the marketing gibberish that sophisticated cloud applications could be deployed in days. Cloud Computing: Concepts, Technology & Architecture details the many benefits of the cloud, but also the complexities that must be addressed for migrations to the cloud to be successful.

For architects of sophisticated cloud solutions, Cloud Computing: Theory and Practice will prove to be an invaluable resource.

The book is not bad - it is just OK.
For me it was not deep enough. I must admit I came to it with a solid background - and expected it to take me a step beyond.

Another book, that actually fulfilled my expectations was a book named "Mastering Cloud Computing".
