Book Description

It is the day after Aimee Patterson’s high school graduation. College beckons, as does her dream of becoming an engineer. On an early evening walk, her cocker spaniel charges into the woods on the other side of the pond. Aimee trails after him, and in the stillness of that forest the unthinkable happens. She becomes paralyzed and watches in horror as her hands vanish before her eyes.

Waking to the sound of voices, Aimee realizes that she has been kidnapped. Little does she know how far away from home she is, though. In an attempt to flee her captors, she launches from their confines only to freeze at the view outside the window. The sky is black and filled with stars, and in the distance is a familiar blue globe. The planet Earth.

A group of humans forced to flee their planet after an epidemic destroyed their civilization now travel the galaxies in search of an antidote. Retrieving samples of plant life from every solar system, on this occasion Aimee was accidentally seized instead.

Aimee must learn to avoid the advances of an awkward young scientist who seems intent on dissecting her, as her own fascination turns to the exotic young warrior, Zak. Having fallen in love with Zak, she is now torn with the decision to return to Earth or live beyond the stars.

"Brilliantly done. A lovely debut to the young adult genre." - Romancing The Book Reviews

5.0 out of 5 stars A really fabulous novel ~ Loved it! 16 Mar. 2014
By Bella
Format:Kindle Edition
**No Spoilers**

The writing is faultless, the characters are very likable and engaging. The plot is unique, exciting and keeps the pages turning at a very brisk pace. The character development and relationships are well thought out and skillfully planned.

So when Aimee, our heroine accidentally gets abducted and finds herself on an alien spaceship she meets Zak, a 'human-esque' young warrior and love blossoms between to the two after she discovers she's aboard the craft for the next 5 years until it finally returns to earth, however there is another who is obsessed with Aimee and he has his own agenda of what he'd like to do with her.

The world-building is superb as you get sucked into the vivid creation of Maureen A. Millers mind, lost in a story with some great twists and turns.

I hate to give things away and spoil the story for other readers, so I'm going to say this, if you love Sci Fi read it, you won't be disappointed!

Aimee is accidentally beamed onto a permanently moving space ship. She slowly makes friends with a warrior named Zach who is the last from his world. Their adventures together bring them close together until they are forced to part. I bought the next book straight away and was not disappointed.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable. 23 Feb. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I'm not giving a synopsis of this story, as others have already done that. Suffice to say, I found it a unique story line, and I enjoyed it. I wish my computer was a JOH, they were brilliant!!
I found the main character Aimee, likable and courageous. As for Zak, what can I say? He sounded gorgeous!
On the whole a good story, that is well written. There was an interesting mix of characters, good and bad. I particularly disliked the scientist Salvan...creepy!
The author's descriptive ability is excellent. No way would I have wanted to be beamed aboard the Horus; or any other space ship for that matter.
It was not a book that kept me up late into the night. Nevertheless, I was hooked enough, to want to keep reading.
The way the author ended the story was great, very satisfying.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great 31 May 2014

Don your intergalactic spacesuits, BEYOND by Maureen A. Miller will take you to unknown galaxies and introduce you to some odd beings. This young adult science fiction novel is a fantastic read, and I give it 4 stars.

In the novel, seventeen-year-old Aimee Patterson is accidentally abducted by aliens while out for a walk, and due to the rotation of the galaxies, can't be returned to her planet for five Earth years. While on the Guardian ship Horus, Aimee meets a lot of people--some really handsome, some creepy--and has some interesting experiences. When the ship is affected by a disease, Aimee must work with Warrior Zak to find a cure.

I really liked this novel. For someone who hasn't read much true science fiction, BEYOND is a great introduction into the genre. The technological ideas will blow your mind. I imagined a much more complex plot with schemers and master manipulators, but in the end the plot was straightforward and simple. Whether that added to or detracted from the book, I'm not sure; I enjoyed reading it either way.

I would have liked some more distinction of time on the ship. Understandably, time on the ship is not the same as Earth time, but based on Aimee's routine, it seems like she is only away from Earth for three Earth nights before being returned. The reader only knows of 2 times that Aimee sleeps and one meal; yet Aimee is told that it will be something like an Earth month that she has to remain on the ship before being able to return to Earth, and her body grows into a more adult womanly figure. Time paradoxes aside, the passage of time in the novel was not clearly illustrated, and so it was a tad difficult to get my bearings.

The romance was sweet and a great illustration of the sublime nature of teenage love, but the issue with time makes it difficult for me to determine whether the declarations of love are believable.

On the technical side, the pace was well done, and there weren't any grammatical issues that detracted from my enjoyment of the book.

Overall, this was a great novel, and I look forward to reading the next in the series, telling us what happened to Zak after Aimee is returned to Earth.

4.0 out of 5 stars Sucked in before I knew it 5 Mar. 2013

Originally I thought this would be a stereo typical band geek lands the quarter back story line, but I was wrong. Instead, while Amy happens to be a geek it is her self confidence and intelligence that get her into and out of some sticky situations. Zak, the handsome leader type, is also an outsider in the homogenous world of the Horus. He not only see's Amy's beauty but he also is impressed with her wit and quick thinking. By the time I got to chapter 3 I couldn't stop reading until I was finished with the book. The world building is good, it doesn't over power the story, and the characters are deep. I very much look forward to reading the next book in the series.

3.0 out of 5 stars The good and the bad 30 Jan. 2014
By Britt - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Ok, so for a young adult book the character was more mature that most. I'm in my mid 20s and I run far away from any book summary becoming in "17 year old...." but I could ignore her age and get into the book. Now the bad. I was reading about half way into the book when I noticed it seemed like one long day. In fact, except for the last chapter it was set up as one day. Midway through the book others was talk about time but the author randomly stated something about two years passing but it was confusing as I was trying to figure out (1) I thought only a day had past not years (2) was it only earth that 2 years passes or 2 years on the ship because there was talk of time moving differently on the ship.

Overall it was good book for a young adult novel, a ok book as a science fiction romance. This book is set up as part of a series and ended as such. I got this book for free so definitely worth a try if you take the plot with a grain of salt.

I downloaded this as a free book from Amazon. A good first book for a YA sci-fi series. Good characters, interesting story, and excellent pacing. Not a deep read, but an entertaining one. I will definitely be reading the next book of the series.

5.0 out of 5 stars First thing I did when I finished this book? I screamed, "Ahh, it can't be over!" 27 Oct. 2012
By Grace Campbell - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Paperback
BEYOND held my attention from the first to last sentence. Aimee Patterson is a smart, brave heroine, who tries to get back to Earth after a spaceship--the Horus--accidentally abducts her. While learning about the people on the Horus, and the disease they are searching a cure for, Aimee falls for top warrior, Zak: totally handsome, totally strong, and totally uninterested in her...at least at first. After she saves his life, it seems he can't help but adore her. Aimee must also deal with--quite literally--a mad scientist who wants to dissect her, believing her anatomy holds a cure for the disease that plagues the ship.
Fighting a bad guy, trying to put an end to a disease, and being in love with a warrior make it extremely difficult for Aimee to decide whether she wants to return home after all.

The humor in the book is witty and clever. The setting is beautifully written, and I found myself wishing I were on the spaceship--the Horus--just so I could personally see everything the author described. The romance between Aimee and Zak unfolds naturally, so that "I" was in love with Zak before the book's end.

Long story short: there's tension, romance, and humor on practically every page, and you should definity read this book. If the rest of the series is as good as this, Maureen A. Miller has a winner!!!!
