Book Description

‘Funny, honest and thoroughly readable ... Great for anyone dreaming of doing something a little different from the norm.’ Alice Griffin, author of Tales from a Travelling Mum

In her debut memoir Narrow Margins Marie Browne saved her family from financial ruin by moving her long-suffering husband three children and a dog on to a houseboat called Happy Go Lucky in search of a less stressful, alternative way of life.

Now in Narrow Minds the family find themselves sucked back into normality, they’re pretty much back where they started, horrible house, no boat and the kids are beginning to threaten mutiny.

Facing perky postmen, ice skating cows, psychotic villagers and outraged rodents, they’re running out of time, their financial situation is getting desperate and there’s every chance life has conspired against them to make sure they never get back afloat. Until they find the answer to their dreams lies with Minerva, a narrow boat even more run-down than the first. This hilarious follow-up shows the lengths to which a desperate woman will go just to restore her preferred lifestyle.

5.0 out of 5 stars Total entertainment 25 Dec. 2011
    Format:Paperback
Here is the second book of Marie Browne`s experience living an alternative lifestyle on a narrowboat and is very near as good as her first title "Narrow Margins". Marie writes in a down to earth, tell-it-like-it-is, warts and all style and the bits that aren`t funny are interesting. Having said that there is much that is funny too and I frequently had to put the book down while I laughed myself breathless. If you have a thing for canals, narrowboats, life on the water or whatever this is the book for you, but read "Narrow Margins" first, you will not be disappointed. This is literary entertainment at it`s very best and I sincerely hope that a third volume will be forthcoming soon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Loved It 10 Mar. 2012
    Format:Kindle Edition
After reading Narrow Margins which I really enjoyed and couldn't put down I was so pleased to see that Marie had written another, Narrow Minds. Once again an excellent read and yet again I couldn't put it down. I, like the previous poster, hope there will be a third!

    4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable 1 Jun. 2012
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Having read Narrow Margins and enjoyed it thoroughly ( I am a narrow boater)I was delighed to see that Marie Browne had written a follow up.
Again it was a good read funny and interesting in equal parts. I would agree with another review that before reading Narrow Minds it would be sensible to read Narrow Margins as this does set the scene for the second book.
I look forward to a third book in due course.

5.0 out of 5 stars Never mind the narrow minds - here's to freedom 17 Dec. 2012
    Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
Another truly fabulous book from Marie. This details the next stage in their life (getting back) on the river, following on from debut novel/memoir 'Narrow Margins'. I loved this - the arrival of the new puppy ... Sam standing up to Charlie ... Marie's almost painful anecdotes about the narrow minded people at the start of the book ... the sheep torpedo (I completely lost it for a while at that bit - ain't laughed that much in ages!). I was a bit worried when everything finished on such a happy and contented note that we would no longer hear from Marie, Geoff and the menagerie ... but I have a sneaking suspiscion that there will be another volume of riverside tales before too long ... fingers crossed

If you took out all the "made a cup of tea/coffee,drunk a cup of tea/coffee,went for a coffee/tea,put the kettle on to make a blah blah blah blah",the book would have half the pages! But she did drag two books out of the same subject. About a quarter of each book is actually about living and travelling on a boat, the rest is mind bendingly boring family issues.

    5.0 out of 5 stars Narrow ... More please! 8 May 2012
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I loved this follow up to the first book, Narrow Margins. It is informative for those thinking about living aboard and funny for those who do (well funny for those who don't too) I wondered whether they would go to sea and here is the answer. (I won't say what the answer is so I don't spoil it for others) I couldn't put my kindle down while reading this as I couldn't with the first book either. I wanted to read on to laugh at the funny bits, but also to see what they all had achieved, I was sad though when I came to the end.

4.0 out of 5 stars Lovely easy reading 13 April 2014
    By Sue R
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a book which is very easy to read and hard to put down. I enjoyed reading Marie's first book, Narrow Margins, very much indeed and that is why I bought this one. I love following the adventures of Marie's family and pets. The only criticism I would make, and this is why I didn't award five stars, is that not only were there several typographical errors but also Marie's punctuation is abysmal. She doesn't know when it is appropriate to use a comma or a semi-colon and neither does she know when a full stop would be even better. Sometimes the text just runs on without any punctuation at all and you have to read it several times to get the gist of the sentence. Other than that, the content is very interesting and at times very funny. Although I have no particular interest in boating, I shall probably buy Marie's third book about life on the waterways simply to follow the escapades of her rather eccentric family.

    1.0 out of 5 stars Terrible book - I wish I hadn't read it. 19 Jun. 2015
    Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This is a terrible book. I read the first in the series, really enjoyed it, and was left with the impression that the author was a brave woman who dealt with a very challenging change in her family's circumstances in a generally pretty impressive way. Then I read this book, and it turns out I was entirely wrong about that. The author doesn't come across well in this at all. When she's living afloat, and getting her own way, she writes a lighthearted and entertaining prose. But when she's on land, she comes across as a selfish and self-centred person, who pursues her determination to live on the water again at what is largely other people's personal and financial cost.

I really wish I had stopped after the first book. I certainly won't be reading any more.
