On a lazy summer morning, ageing author Vincent Duncan takes an unsettling phone call from his literary agent. Peter Temple indulges his humorous side in this scathingly brilliant portrayal of a writer past his peak.

5.0 out of 5 stars A short story from a master of crime writing 20 April 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Peter Temple is a superb crime writer. Once you read him you are hooked, and I wish he would publish another novel, either in the Jack Irish series or maybe a follow on from The Broken Shore and Truth. He is the only crime author I have ever reread - his books are very detailed and his style very fluid, so that even though on a reread you know the outcome, you never feel you are going over old ground. This novella is thoroughly enjoyable and Peter, if you read these reviews, this is a plea from an avid fan who is longing for a new book.

4.0 out of 5 stars Paperback writer 19 Jun. 2014

Vincent Duncan is a novelist. He was first published at the age of 23; he has never had a rejection; he has a cushy job teaching creating writing at the local university and an annual tour of the US to look forward to. Duncan likes fast cars and fast women. He’s a success.

Ithica In My Mind is a short story of a lazy man who has not noticed that the world has changed around him. People (both punters and publishers) are no longer queuing up to buy his books. He is no longer the star draw in his university department. His poor choices in wives and investments have left him in a precarious place. There is some insight into the life and mindset of the famous.

This story is a well told moment of realisation. All Duncan’s chickens come home to roost and, as they do, the reader discovers what stuff he is made of – whether he has the inner resilience and agility to adapt to the new situation.

This is a very brief work and, unlike Peter Temple’s longer works, is not in the crime genre. It is quite stylised and there’s not much development or depth of characterisation. It’s a bit of a one trick pony. But as a bit of fun, the story works well, the pacing is right and there is pay-off at the end.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great characterisation in a short story 10 April 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The short story seemed to be in decline, but Peter Temple shows it can still work. Great development of characterisation of the ageing author, his vanity, resentments and his relatiionship with his trophy wife. Like all good short stories there is a terrific kick at the end (think of O'Henry) but I won't spoil it for you

5.0 out of 5 stars Oh, how I just wish I could write a review 13 April 2013
Format:Kindle Edition
Oh, how I just do wish I could write a review of ITHACA in my MIND by Peter Temple, as purchased through Amazon. I have something of a fixation on the work of this great Australian author, but I do also prefer my books in print, and a kindle edition is the only one being sold by Amazon. At 82 years of age a person is entitled to a personal preferance I believe. Or at any age for that matter.

However if I had read it, I would have given this novella five stars with no hesitation and urged all reading this review to also purchase the as yet 4 novels in the (not connected) Jack Irish series. They are outstanding, and for me the films do not do them justice. Silly question: why is it taking Peter Temple so long to write the fifth in the series? You tend to get a bit nervous about these things when you are 82!

By the way, The Broken Shore and Truth are brilliant books also, but careful - you could well find yourself fixated too!

Like the review title says, but are we ever going to get another full book? Jack Irish preferably but I would read anything!
