---

The elder vampire Ashayt was once a simple peasant girl living in Egypt, on the outskirts of the great city of Memphis. Her life changes first when she meets a man -- Amun Sa -- with whom she falls in love, and second when she meets a deadly creature in the reeds, who bestows upon her both the gift and curse of immortality.

This two-chapter story is a spoiler-free excerpt from The Children of the Sun, the upcoming conclusion to the II AM Trilogy by Christopher Buecheler.

I loved the Blood that Bonds and went looking for other books by the author. ! saw this along with the other two from the trilogy and bought them all. The trilogy is fantastic but I was very disappointed when I read this to find it is just a couple of chapters from another book and told me nothing new.

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable! 10 Nov. 2012

You will need to read the other books in the series to enable you to fully engage with this short story, however as it is not designed as a standalone story that doesn't detract from the enjoyment of it.

3.0 out of 5 stars lacking the linking period 31 Oct. 2013

As an addition in the book Children of the Sun it is good as a short story on its own it could do with a bit more detail about the period following where it now finishes.
