Book Description

1069. Many English still hold out against the Norman invaders: but the resistance has splintered into factions. Some still follow Prince Edgar, the lawful heir; others cling to the hope that King Harold secretly survived the Battle of Hastings. As for Hereward the Wake, he decides to make an alliance with the King of Denmark: but when the Danes arrive, Hereward begins to fear that he has made a terrible mistake. As tensions rise within the rebel camp, the Normans lay their plots, and old enemies reappear, thirsting for Hereward's blood.

When reading a trilogy, this is part two, it is hard to review the middle book, In film law this should be the one derided by the critics only to be revised later as being the best. Not sure either way.Having said that, the author has a very clear understanding of his subject, Hereward an all but forgotten English hero, all but written out of history, only a now defunct radio station seemed to bear his name, presumably by the Norman victors, Hereward is a story that needs telling. Scotland has it's Bruce and it's Wallace, England has Hereward, a real man unlike Arthur or Robin Hood. The problem is, as I mentioned in the review of the first book, this appears to be written in the style of one hour episodes of a TV series,a series of adventures, a strange one eyed man that could be Woden or even Harold, with an almost comic villain. The fact there is a basis of fact and there really was a rebellion in East Anglia and there really was a camp of refuge does at least give it veneer of credibility.. but thin one. If you want to find out about Hereward, this is probably not the series to read, if you want a romping good yarn pick it up and enjoy it. I did.
