Book Description

In times of suffering, simplistic answers ring empty and hollow. But Henri Nouwen, beloved spiritual thinker and author, offers real comfort in the concrete truth of God's constancy. Nouwen suggests that by greeting life's pains with something other than despair, we can find surprising joy in our suffering. He suggests that the way through suffering is not in denial, but rather in living fully in the midst of the trials life brings our way.

5.0 out of 5 stars An excellent book 22 Mar. 2013

I bought this book for a friend who suffers from depression. She said it gave her a greater understanding of depression and how it helped her come to terms with and deal with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars Highly inspirational, 10-stars! 17 Jan. 2015
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
I bought this book for a friend of mine who is having severe problems with her marriage, but she was not nearby when the book arrived so I started to read it myself even though I'm not currently facing any major traumas or sorrow in my life. The message here goes well beyond the subtitle of "finding hope in hard times". The book is uplifting and hugely inspirational for anyone who wants or needs some spiritual guidance for day-to-day living, and it is very easy to read. I ended up giving the book to my friend, bought another copy for myself, but then gave that to someone else, and am now planning to get another 2-3 copies so I'll have something on hand to give out to someone else who may be in need, while also putting my own copy on my book shelf at home.

5.0 out of 5 stars Amazing book! 21 Mar. 2014
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I love Henri Nouwen books and this is no exception! It tries to make meaning out of the suffering many of us go through. Instead of suffering as a period to be endured Nouwen tries to encourage us to embrace it and turn it into a period of grace. He compares trust to a trapeze artist....dare you let go knowing God will catch you????
