Book Description

In 1987, Dr. Benjamin Carson gained worldwide recognition for his part in the first successful separation of Siamese twins joined at the back of the head. Carson pioneered again in a rare procedure known as a hemispherectomy, giving children without hope a second chance at life through a daring operation in which he literally removes one half of their brain. Such breakthroughs aren’t unusual for Ben Carson. He’s been beating the odds since he was a child. Raised in inner-city Detroit by a mother with a third grade education, Ben lacked motivation. He had terrible grades. And a pathological temper threatened to put him in jail. But Sonya Carson convinced her son he could make something of his life, even though everything around him said otherwise. Trust in God, a relentless belief in his own capabilities, and sheer determination catapulted Ben from failing grades to the directorship of pediatric neurosurgery at Johns Hopkins Hospital in Baltimore, Maryland. Gifted Hands takes you into the operating room to witness surgeries that made headlines around the world—and into the private mind of a compassionate, God-fearing physician who lives to help others.

5.0 out of 5 stars Absolutely inspiring 23 July 2000
By A Customer
I continue to wonder why for the over 19 years I have been on this planet I had never heard about this book and although I had heard about the famous brain surgery separating the twins joined at the head, I did not know who was behind this. However after reading Gifted Hands (thanks to a friend), I am not in the least ambivalent about the fact that Ben Carson, the main character has leapt out of the book to become my role model; that his exploits have become a challenge for me, spoors to lead me to my goal, and that his personality in a very large measure has become one which is definitely going to influence me (and yes positively) for the rest of my life.
This book enables you to know what determination can do and where it can get you, that nothing is impossible if you really want to make it possible. Different plants bear fruit at different times in their lives. You as a 'farmer' just needs to be commited to obtaining those fruits. The time it takes may differ from another 'farmer' because he is cultivating other plants.
It manifests what power there is in having faith in the Lord as well, that he is one who does not fail as long as we trust. Being a Christian, this book rejuvenated my faith. Ben Carson was one who had faith. He was not a fanatic but yet believed in what the Lord could do. He did his best and let God do the rest! That's one message!
This book urges one on to do the best in what he sets his hands to. If you are not prepared to do something well, then why do it in the first place. Ben Carson's yearn to succeed in everything he set his hands to is evidence of this. He defied the odds -financial difficulties, racial discrimination at times etc.
Ben Carson was black and he became a distinguished neurosurgeon.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent 24 Jan. 2001
By A Customer
I read this book while i was on holiday in Egypt. I am a very slow reader but i finished this book within 2 days (believe me that was an achievement for me). The book explains that although we might be in a prejudice society, it is how we see ourselves and what we focus on that matters.
Ben, although initially not a bright student was able to overcome all the racial abuse and discrimination that was around him. His mother did not for one day and i repeat not for one day say to him that you are being discriminated against at work or school but instead she encouraged him to keep reading and not give up the hard work.
I have learnt that this world does not belong to anybody. That having a fulfilling and rewarding career/life is your own decision. As far as you believe in God and are determined to succeed you will succeed. No human being black or white is God so we are all entitled and are capable of succeeding in any career that we want.
The question is what kind of person do we want to be and then ask what we need in order to get there. The next thing, is do everything that is required to get where we want to be no matter the obstacle that are in front of us.
I am sure that after reading this book, you will ask yourself why you did not try doing something that you really wanted to do in the past.
Have a good read.

5.0 out of 5 stars "Gifted hands-a must for every home" 17 Mar. 2006
Ever since I read Carsons first book, I've never stopped looking out 4 and reading any of his other books. I've kept on spreading the good message his motivational and inspiring books have to all Nigerians and any other fellow I come across with.
I must not fail to use this opportunity to commend Ben's mother who layed the very first foundation for the children to get to where God had destined them to be. As a matter of fact, reading Ben's books inspires and motivates one to hardwork, confidence and trust in God.
Ben, I am very proud and blessed to have identified with you through your books.

I bought this book and Think Big from a door-to-door sales man years ago. I used to read the book to my children, when they were growing UP, to illustrate that the reward of hardwork and faith. My eldest son statrted University this year and took the book with him. He was really impressed and has passed some of the messages to his friend. I find Gifted hand very inspiring and motivating. The book is well written.

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic inspiring book 24 Aug. 2010
I decided to read this book after reading one of Ben Carson's other books - Think Big, and it did not let me down in any way. The book follows the inspiring life of Ben Carson who despite not having all the advantages in life manages to make the most of his situations and prosper. It has inspired me to not settle for second best but to push myself to achieve my dreams.
Carson challenges the excuses many of us use to not motivate ourselves to better ourselves, excuses such as racism, coming from a poor family, not having all the same advantages, not being clever enough at school etc.. by showing us that with hard work, faith and determination nothing can hold us back apart from ourselves.
I would throughly recommend reading this book, as it will change your way of thinking and give you that kick up the bum we often need. Its such a great book that my mum who has a slight aversion to reading hasn't been able to put it down and has been inspired so much she has found a new zeal for her studying.
Great read, you'd be doing yourself a disservice by not reading it.
