5.0 out of 5 stars This is an English to French dictionary 24 Oct. 2010
By Blair Anna - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
I am surprised everyone is getting so confused. This dictionary is for French definitions of English words, not the other way around. So obviously it's going to seem basic, and obviously, 99% of words won't be in it if you're looking for definitions of French words. This is NOT for English speakers trying to improve their understanding of French texts, but for English speakers wanting to know the equivalent of an English expression in French, or for French speakers wanting to better understand and translate texts in English!

It is actually a very good dictionary, not basic at all, as it focuses on translation issues, by giving you English words in different contexts, and their equivalent in French.

And it did say in the product description: "Access French definitions and explanations for English words"...

1.0 out of 5 stars No alphabet links - poor navigation for an ebook 29 Dec. 2011
By Lindley L. Karstens - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
While this may be a perfectly fine English-French dictionary in hard copy, asking a user to "page" through the entire alphabet worth of content to get to the 'T' section is just plain stupid. I was planning to use this on the fly. I need a Table of Contents that allows me to jump to the section I need in a couple of touches.

Downloaded it and tried to get to the TOC, but got the A section. Returned it. Enough said.

5.0 out of 5 stars A good english-french dictionary (and no it isn't an english-french/french-english one) 22 Nov. 2011
By eli - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I am french and I read mostly in english. When I read in french I don't need to translate words to english, but when I read in english I do need sometimes to translate a word to french. That's why I looked for an english-french dictionary and not an english-french/french-english dictionary. This one does the job, when I don't understand a word in english it gives me the meaning in french.

I completely agree with M.A. BLAIR and I really don't understand how people don't know a one way dictionary from a two way one.

So if your first language is french and you like reading in english but sometimes need to look up a word in a dictionary, this one is for you !

4.0 out of 5 stars The KINDLE edition has one unique feature 10 April 2013
By Simon Esposito - Published on Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I was tempted by the more comprehensive Robert and others, but the Merriam-Webster has one fantastic feature that I haven't seen in ANY other English-to-X dictionary: it is set in my Kindle as a FRENCH book. This means that I can do an instant full French-dictionary look-up of the suggested translations to get more information - exactly like what you should do with a printed dictionary. With others set as ENGLISH books the Kindle goes to the English dictionary for the selected word. Quite annoying! I wonder if it was some kind of lucky accident, since even the Merriam-Websters for other languages don't seem to have this feature. I suppose there's no way to permanently set a book's default language for yourself?

P.S. I see now that there is a black arrow next to your default dictionary title in the 'boxed' dictionary entry that comes up when you select a word. This allows you to bring up one of your other dictionaries, so you CAN see what your French-English dictionary has to say about the suggested translation-word fairly quickly, after all. But (for me, at least) only for the default dictionary does the box offer a direct link to the dictionary entry. (Not as big a problem as it used to be, because the Kindle seems to be getting better at processing the dictionary text into its pop-up box without garbling it.) So I now deduct a star, because the Collins Robert is not too far behind in functionality, while being superior in coverage and accuracy.

4.0 out of 5 stars I love having a digital dictionary to carry about with me 2 Oct. 2014
By Just My Opinion - Published on Amazon.com

I love having a digital dictionary to carry about with me. What holds me back from giving five stars are two things: 1. It's a digital dictionary and doesn't take any real extra space to add extra forms of words. When I was in school using a paper dictionary (which this essentially is) I frequently couldn't find the form of the word I wanted because the dictionaries only had the main translation/use of a word. Nowadays when I go online I can find every possible use of a word plus ways it's used in combinations with other words. I believe a digital edition of a dictionary should easily be able to add more in even though it may not be able to be as thorough as online. 2. I didn't having to buy the English-French as a separate product from the French-English. This is minor and I believe it's because it makes it easier to set one as your official dictionary on your kindle and be able to give you the proper translation - especially relevant when we have words in both languages that are spelled the same. When practicing French by reading a French novel I set the French-English as my dictionary and only have to touch the word I don't know to get my translation.
