Book Description

19 Aug 2002 Essential Asia Series

A unique blend of autobiography and fiction, 38 Bahadurabad tells the story of a young girl growing up in Pakistan in the late 1960s, as the narrator recalls the motley group of eccentrics who fashioned her upbringing, and the father who, following his death in 1972, was apotheosised to near sainthood. The memories of her childhood - comic, sad, and always touching - build toward the concluding story, with its revelation of her father's other life.

Combining a rich and evocative depiction of Karachi life with an absorbing portrait of a remarkable household, 38 Bahadurabad is a first novel with an original and affecting voice.

An absolutely gripping read, I wish I'd bought this book when it first came out! This is the sort of book you could read in one sitting. All in all a great read. You definitely get a feel for the author's experiences growing up in Pakistan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Simply Superb! 18 Mar 2013
By F Ghori
Format:Paperback|Amazon Verified Purchase
Arguably one of the best novels based in Karachi. Zeeba Sadiq has preserved the Karachi of the 60s-70s through her writings for generations to come. Her prose is witty and funny making the book a fantastic read. After I read this book, I though of emailing her to thank her for writing such an amazing novel but unfortunately I found out that she has tragically passed away recently at a very young age. Rest in peace Zeeba Sadiq and thank you for your brilliant novel!
