A Brazilian masterpiece in Spanish translation 29 Sept. 2009

In 1895, under the impact of Naturalism, Adolfo Caminha wrote what is probably the first gay novel in Latin America: "Bom-Criolho". It has finally appeared As "El buen negro", in Spanish translation by none other than acclaimed Mexican novelist Luis Zapata, with a preface by no-less famous Uruguayan poet residing in Brazil, Alfredo Fressia. The story concerns the fatal attraction of a black sailor for a white cabin boy which ends, in a direct reference to Othello, with his murdering the boy in a fit of jealous rage. I have myself studied the Othello motif when comparing "Bom-Criolho" to Carlos Montenegro's "Hombres sin mujer". A very welcome addition to the canon of the gay Latin American novel, now available to Spanish- speaking readers.
