When we allow our heart to work it's alchemy we can turn our pain into peace, grief into joy and anger into serenity.....such is the central message of this brilliantly conceived and written book by author Michael Brown.
But is it all too good to be true?
When I began this book my heart was heavy and sad....in eighteen months I had lost a lot of members of my family, my husband was in hospital, my knee was throbbing with the pain of pulled hamstrings and my daughter had just split with her partner. I had spent a restless, tearful night and was cross and tired and so low I could reach up to touch rock bottom!
This book arrived on my doorstep and I started to read it over breakfast......and elevenses and lunch.....Such is the structure of the book that you can just read and read as it carries you forward, exploring yourself and your actions and reactions to your world and life as it goes. It is in no way patronising and does not dwell on religion ( it was my fear that it might ) except to perhaps awaken the element of God within us all.
Changing my self and the way to release my own `alchemy' will take practise.....a lot of years of bad habits, mind sets....childhood training to be good!...have gone into me, but sitting here now as darkness approaches, I feel that I have spent a very useful day in reading this book, a day that has changed my life.
It will also change yours

A simple-to-read guide on the human emotional journey from infant to elder and what might be stopping us from living a fully integrated life. Michael Brown introduces the phenomena of emotional immaturity that so many of us suffer from. He says, "Nothing is more important than the intent to feel life in all it's fullness". He covers so many topics that are relevant to leading a more authentic life. Not denying or suppressing but rather allowing and integrating our emotions is the path to being fully present in our own life. He says, "As we allow this experience of felt-perception to unfold, a remarkable discovery dawns within our awareness like a rising sun after a long dark night: THIS LIFE, THE ONE THAT WE ARE LIVING RIGHT NOW, JUST AS IT IS IN EACH MOMENT, IS 'THE SPIRITUAL EXPERIENCE' WE HAVE BEEN SEEKING". This is a book I will go back to again and again.

This excellent book covers ground somewhere between Eckhart Tolle's explanation of the "pain body" in 'The Power of Now', and the book 'Letting Go' by David R Hawkins about suppressed emotions and how to shine the light of awareness on them. 'Alchemy of the Heart' complements both of these books but would also work well for those not familiar with Tolle or Hawkins. The basic message is that most of the time we unconsciously repress unpleasant emotions and try to distract ourselves from ever fully feeling them. Repressed emotions govern thoughts, which in turn determine our actions and even our circumstances. Instead of feeling the reality of what we repressed (which would allow its energy to shift) we attempt to improve our lives by trying to change circumstances or trying to change our thinking. But, as Michael Brown shows in this book (and David R Hawkins independently demonstrates in 'Letting Go'), this approach is the wrong way around - only via the alchemy of the heart (though being aware of /feeling repressed emotions and whatever comes up moment by moment) can we move out of the cycle of ever-increasing suffering. This book contains a message that could (and should) turn the fields of personal development and spiritual growth upside down. Both of these fields are dominated by approaches that focus on trying to change thinking rather than emphasising the power of paying attention to unconsciously repressed feelings. Michael communicates his insights brilliantly and makes astonishing plays on words to show the illusions we have been trapped in. He also gives some interesting ideas on how we develop emotionally at different stages of life. I did not agree with every single idea in the book, but you do not have to agree with every word to find that this is an amazing, revolutionary (though the author would say evolutionary) and practical book. Michael's insights are a truly life-changing path to genuine joy and peace.
