Finely researched and excellently produced, as you would expect from English Heritage, all round a quality item. Well endowed with photo's, maps, plans and drawings, the book gives the background history of the GWR not just Paddington Station. The works of the legendary Isambard Kingdom Brunel outwith the aforementioned are also explained. For instance he drew up plans for the Great Exhiition hall, losing out to Joseph Paxton, but being magnanimous enough to congratulate him and offer help. As an aside, the Crystal Palace, as it became, was erected in an astounding five months! This is another example of the detail in this book, Paxton was also advised by the wonderful W.H Barlow, and indeed Paddington had Paxton's patent roof glassware originally. Some of the Paddington costs were met from Brunels own pocket due to the board not sanctioning some details. A prodigious talent who seemed to thrive on creating huge infrastructure projects. I picked up a lot of information about the station, which I last visited in 1975. Reading a book such as this one also opens your eyes to what is about you, particularly the details which the station visitor wouldn't perhaps notice. The end of the book also has a very satisfying outcome, the original Brunel bridge over the canal had survived the rebuilding of of the rest of the Bishop's Road bridge, and has been saved for posterity, at no loss to the developers, a good outcome. An excellent well researched and detailed book the standard to achieve for similar works.

This book is packed with information about Paddington Station's history since its earliest days.

It is also widely illustrated with technical documents, many periods photographs and reproductions of printed material.

It should be of interest to anybody into railways history, of course, but also every reader interested in the history of transportation, and architecture, and everyday life in Britain.

Highly recommended.
