Excellent, succinct pointers for writers 31 July 2013
By Aisling D'Art - Published on

Often, I buy great writing references... and then don't find time to read them, cover to cover. This book and others in the series are short and jam-packed with lots of useful information.

This isn't a replacement for The Writers Journey: Mythic Structure for Writers, 3rd Edition, but a slightly different twist on the concept, while still including many of the same elements.

I've bought a couple of books in this series and I'll probably buy the rest, too. All it takes is one really good, juicy idea to improve a book, and that's money (and time) well spent. These books deliver plenty of good tips.

This book provides good information, well-written, straight and to the point, in bite-sized sections. The pages are easy to skim. Then, you can zero-in on the most useful points for your current writing project.

Added bonus: This book is small enough to fit into a backpack or purse, without taking up lots of room. (Don't let the size fool you. Like the TARDIS, it's bigger on the inside.)

Extremely Helpful Book! 5 July 2013
By Dara Fogel - Published on
Format: Paperback
I highly recommend this slim guide for all serious novelists.

In this book, Bernhardt shows how to connect character to plot, to create riveting and enticing stories. Many writers fumble in this area. Bernhardt's advice is practical & easy to implement. He gives practical, hands-on advice that can be immediately put to use. The exercises at the back of each chapter help you apply the nuggets of insight found on every page. He has eliminated the mystery and reveals the structure behind writing memorable characters, without taking away from your precious writing time. As a best selling author & writing teacher for many years, Bernhardt has earned his bona fides.

I have read many writing guides in my day. Bernhardt consistently ranks amongst the best I've found. I recommend all 3 of his Red Sneaker Writing guides to anyone who is serious about writing good fiction. He is also a hell of a good teacher in person, so take advantage of his classes & workshops, if you are able. If you're not able to learn from Bill in person, these books are the next best thing! They also contain his insight, sincerity and willingness to share what his career has taught him (even if they aren't as fun or cute!).

One of my best instruction resources 4 Aug. 2013

I have been writing for a while and have found some very helpful and some incredibly dumb instruction books written by self-absorbed writers. William Bernhardt knows what he is talking about, conveys the information in clearly understood language without pretense or artsy generalities that causes so many others to fall flat. I am impressed and have been enlightened. I wish he had undertaken this effort sooner and I'd found it sooner because the material and his methods lead me to the conclusion he wants his readers to succeed and grow. I truly believe reading his instruction books have advanced me another step toward my writing goal. I have read and recommend this and his other books in the series. I look forward to and will purchase future installments of his instruction.

Solid Foundational Knowledge 23 Nov. 2013

I have to echo what others have said: the title is misleading as there is very little that even references the classic character arc known as the Hero's Journey. However, that aside, this is still an excellent little primer on plot and character. There's not much here that's absolutely new, but it's a fast read full of useful reminders for old hands and solid foundational knowledge for those with less experience.

A Must Read 14 July 2013
By Dreamer Action Figure - Published on

Having just completed, this the third short tome so far in Bill Bernhardt's Red Sneaker Writers Book Series, I can honestly say that I learned a lot. It's all about the fundamentals, folks. Dynamite comes in small packages and these books are an incredible value. Re Bernhardt's advice to writers contained in this series (of which Perfecting Plot is the best...or at least contained the information I needed the most at that moment): Learn It. Love it. Live it.
