3 of 3 people found the following review helpful By Robert William DeMarco on 19 Aug. 2007
Format: Paperback
Any single-volume history of Catholicism is likely to be disappointing for many readers. This volume in one of most intelligent and judicious available. Among its many positive features, it has a more thorough and more candid discussion of the late eighteenth, the nineteenth, and the early twentieth centuries than any of the other single-volume histories in English. This history, from the French Revolution to the death of Pius XII, is crucial for any one trying to understand the Second Vatican Council and the contemporary situation of Catholicism.

A well written and readable book. A good balance between history and religion. It gives a warts and all view of the subject matter whilst maintaining a respectful perspective of the subject.
In all an excellent book for anyone wanting to know about man's interaction with religion.

After reading this book you realise just how far the Catholic Church has come over the years. It's helped me understand how lucky I am to be a practising Catholic today.

As good as. well nearly as good as Fr.Hughes's slim volume. I guess he had more time and resources and used fr. hughes as the bench mark, Nevertheless an admirable work, thanks
