I really like the way Bill Evans teaches in this book. I'm a banjo beginner who never got far with a guitar because it was just too hard for me.. With this book I'm now able to sing and play along to a few songs in just a couple of weeks. It got me playing very quickly and then leads me on step by step to get a more interesting sound. I highly recommend it

I thought this was a very good book to start with, I bought my Banjo on impulse and bought this soon after, it gives a good explanation of your Banjo and builds confidence as you go, I try and practice at least 20 minutes a day if I can find the time and with the help of the book and CD, can now play a passable version of Cripple Creek with the CD backing track after about 5 weeks. The book isn't intimidating in any way, as some books of this elk can be and it's suprising how satisfying it can be playing Skip to my Lou within the first session. I'm now moving onto Banjo for Dummies to take things further but as an introduction to playing a getting your head round basic banjo'ing you can do a lot worse.

I bought this book for my brothers birthday as he was getting a banjo. It's a good book to look at if your a guitarist as it includes tab, but not many chords, mainly G and C peices

I am progressing (slowly) through the book and am just over half way through. The lessons are very clear and the CD Tracks are very useful in demonstrating how you should make the banjo sound.A very enjoyable challenge.

If you're 100% fresh to playing a banjo, or have never played a guitar, then the Absolute Beginners Banjo book is a great place to begin. It starts off introducing the banjo to you, naming the various parts and talks a bit about tuning. It then moves on by teaching you your first chords with some classic Bluegrass songs to learn. The accompanying CD is helpful to hear the examples in the book and also provides backing tracks for you to play along to of each of the various songs. Obviously the 5-string banjo is not all about strumming a few chords, so the book quickly moves on to teaching a few classic finger picking styles. It's very easy to follow with clear illustrations and tips on techniques.

If you play another stringed instrument such as a guitar, then you may find the first half of the book a bit too basic. I already play guitar so for me I jumped well over half, and being a short book there wasn't much left for me to get from it. But then it is an ABSOLUTE beginners book and with that in mind, it;s an excellent and friendly place to start.
