Product Description

From the Author

We really like Delphi!
We wrote this book for both beginners and more experienced programmers. It is based on course material we have successfully used with students of various levels (from school children, through undergraduates and postgraduates, to professional programmers and pensioners).

We teach Delphi because we like Delphi. It is relatively easy to use and produces professional results. It is fun to program with Delphi.

In the book we aim to guide the reader through the main features of Object Pascal by introducing programming concepts in tandem with Delphi components. Object Pascal is the underlying programming language provided by the Delphi environment.

Whichever version of Delphi you use, this book will be applicable.

Discover Delphi - Programming Principles Explained
Shirley Williams and Sue Walmsley

Suitable both for beginners and more experienced programmers, Discover Delphi provides a complete and user-friendly introduction to programming with this accessible, prize winning language. Supported by a wealth of screen shots, examples, quizzes and exercises, the book harnesses the unique nature of Delphi to enable the reader to acquire fundamental programming skills while learning to design and produce attractive Graphical User Interfaces (GUIs).
Guiding the reader through the chief features of Delphi’s underlying language, Object Pascal, the authors introduce key programming concepts in tandem with essential Delphi components and their important methods, properties and events. Discover Delphi develops the skills needed not only to program within the Delphi environment but also to go on and learn other imperative and object-based languages.

Based on successfully used course material, Discover Delphi is an ideal text for a first year programming course in Delphi. It is also suitable for other introductory programming courses across a range of student disciplines and perfect as an individual self-study guide and reference.
Shirley Williams is a Senior Lecturer in Computer Science at the University of Reading.
Sue Walmsley is a Senior Scientific Officer in Computer Science at the University of Reading.
They have both taught programming for over 10 years, using a variety of languages and environments.

Is one of those books you buy when you first start with delphi with no previous programming experiance. If you dont fall into that catagory i would not reccomend this book at all. Is a well presented book that does explain well in most cases but fails to deliver when it comes to detail. I am a comp sci student at uni and this book helped me with the basics and touches on the next level but always manages to leave you hanging. After the first few practicles at uni the book became largely useless and as a reference book fails miserably. As a book to kick start you into the world of programming i would buy this book not for £30+ squid mind get it second hand then it might be worth the money you paid for it. so to conclude this book for me is a good book that illustrates well all the BASIC concepts of delphi and will help you understand programming techniques but you certainly will not be a programming genius afterwards. it got me through my first year so can be thankfull for that.

Not that I'd ever recommend learning Delphi when you should be mastering C, but this would help a first year student or novice until they gain the confidence to learn a proper language. In that sense this book does the job well, it's just that once you're done with it you will never need it again because you'll naturally move on to C/C++/Java etc. or if you do go on with Delphi you'll need a better reference book. Bought second hand would be worthwhile if so determined or otherwise required to learn Delphi and object Pascal as your first programming language.

This propably the best book for an introduction to delphi. It is suitable for the absolute beginner or the experienced beginner. There a lot of illustrations in the book and it follows a step by step consept when using code examples. It also touche some more advanced features like object oriantated programming, exception handling etc. However it will not be enought to go in depth inside Delphi."Mastering Delphi" series book and this one is all you will ever need to create any kind of Delphi programm.

This book is perfect if you want to learn Delphi, but also if you have started learning Delphi and want a reference book.
Unusually for Delphi books, it actually covers all Delphi versions 1-4 inc.
If you want to learn Delphi, or just extend your knowledge this is a great book.
