This is a decent dual-band high-speed wireless extender that supports modern security principles. It has a single RJ45 port in addition to it's wireless function which can be used to create a wired connection to a device without wireless connectivity. The extender can be configured by a device plugged into this port if desired.

I installed one at a friends house and connected it to a Virgin Media super hub router. The automatic configuration button process didn't quite work and although the extender appeared to be configured, devices were unable to connect to the internet. I'm an IT professional so I didn't spend any more time using the automatic configuration and just I plugged a laptop to the RJ45 port and configured it manually. This might be a bit daunting for a novice but it is straightforward and Netgear provide step-by-step instructions. I see from previous reviews that some people have had this issue while others haven't so obviously its inconsistent in this regard. Marked down one star for this.

Once setup is done, you have two additional wireless networks which are the same name as your original wireless network with the suffix 2GEXT and 5GEXT respectively. Wireless access passwords for the additional wireless networks are the same as the original. I read a previous reviewer's report that the extender uses a different IP subnet for DHCP from your original router but I didn't have this issue. Its possible Netgear have patched the firmware since that review but I don't know for sure. I have not attempted to network between devices on the WIFI because the end user simply wanted additional internet browsing capability and not networking between devices.

Its nice to have a piece of network kit that is easy to set up and just works. This is one such item. Netgear has clearly put a lot of effort into simplifying initial setup, to the point that if you have a WPS (Wireless Protected Setup) button on your existing router, you only need to press a couple of buttons to get it working.

So, what does it do? Actually, it can perform two different tasks, acting as either a Wireless Access Point or as a Wireless Extender. Both of these tasks give you WiFi connectivity where you haven't previously had it, but the method is slightly different.

Most routers nowadays have WiFi built in, but if you need WiFi coverage away from your main router (if the signal gets too weak to use in the remoter parts of your house or garden) you need another WiFi device. You can connect it to your router using ethernet cable, which gives faster results but involves cabling. This is "Access Point" mode. Or you can position the extender inside the coverage of your existing WiFi router so that it will relay the WiFI signal to devices that are further away. This doesn't involve any cabling, but it means two wireles "hops", from your computer to the extender and then from the extender to your internet router. This is Extender mode. I suspect mode people will want to use Extender mode because it is so much easier to install.

Setting the Extender up in Extender mode is really straightforward if your router has a WPS button. You need to connect it wirelessly to your existing router, which you do by plugging it in near your router pressing the on/off button, and when it has started up (it takes about 60 seconds) pressing the WPS buttons on both your Extender and your existing router.

Wanted to setup a second Google Chromecast in our bedroom. The wi-fi connection there is a bit patchy.

Bought this product on Amazon.

1. It arrived the next day - full marks to Amazon Prime!
2. Packaging was perfect. Again, fantastic!
3. Opened the box. It contained the Extender and documentation.
4. Plugged the Extender into an electrical outlet near the modem. Waited a minute.
5. Pressed the WPS button on the Extender.
6. Pressed the WPS button on the modem.
7. Extender became ready with a new wi-fi network with "_EXT" added to the name of my original network name.
8. Took the Extender out.
9. Plugged it into a power outlet in our bedroom.

That's it!

After that, it was a simple matter plugging in the Chromecast and configuring it.

All done in 15 minutes.

Bought this for my son to use in his bedroom. He constantly moans that the internet connection is rubbish in his room and his xbox will lag or freeze altogether. He tells me he had 1 bar of signal before buying the extender....He now has full signal, no more xbox lagging and no more moaning. So easy to use just plug it in, hold down the wps button on the side untill the green light flashes, you then have 2 minutes to go press the wps button on your wifi router. The green light should now be on constantly on the extender. Now they are linked. If you have a password set on your wifi router you will need to enter this when prompted. Just one more thing that is probably obvious to most but not to me, once you have linked your router and the extender you need to go to wifi settings on which ever device you are using and connect to the extender. Mine was named the same as my router but with -ext after it.
Well worth buying.
