I am an ex-journalist and used to be obsessed with the news but I have barely bought a newspaper for months - I've just maxed out on the misery. Murder, war, recession, Silvio Berlusconi; yes I know they're out there, but I don't need to be gorging on the grim details daily. So instead I am now getting my daily news (during my morning sit-down) from this excellent little yellow book. As well as being relentlessly cheerful, it's witty, erudite and surprising. It reminds you what a huge, various place the world is, and of (as that famously uncheerful man Philip Larkin put it in an uncharacteristic line) "the million-petalled flower of being alive".
