Product Description

Every day our newspapers are full of tales of misery, death, destruction, meltdown, recession and there s always some grumpy old sod constantly reporting about all the evil things going in the world. And maybe they re right. There is a lot of that going about. But there s also a lot more to life than doom and gloom. And for every tale of woe there s at least one story of fun and frolics. There are so many reasons to be happy and 365 Reasons To Be Cheerful captures a year of the best of them. It s a celebration of the good days throughout history and a nice pick-me-up in these worrying and troubled times. It s hilarious, uplifting and fun-spirited designed to make everybody look on the bright side of life! You can revel in the celebrations of Mardi Gras (24 February), chuck a sickie and commemorate Ferris Bueller s Day Off (11 June), learn about the atomic launch of the bikini (July 5), raise a cheer for the first Mexican Wave (15 October) or simply get sloshed with the Scots on Hogmanay (31 December). Here's to a cheerful year!

I don't find many so-called `humour' books actually that funny these days and a lot of the trivia ones are nothing but regurgitated lists with no personality. So I was pretty impressed with `365 Reasons To Be Cheerful'. What I liked about this book was that the author has done his research to seek out an event, anniversary or discovery from every day in the year that is cheering in itself, but has then also written about it in a light-hearted and sure-footed way. I started by looking up my birthday (10 May, karaoke invented) and ended up reading about 50 entries in a oner, from the introduction of flavoured crisps (15 May), through the day the Pill was first introduced (23 June 1960) up to the first appearance of the bikini (5 July 1946), because the information is interesting and fun and the author's `voice' is engaging.

If you're looking for a book of this type (a gift or something to keep you amused on the bus/bog), this is one of the best around.

Who needs newspapers? 16 Dec 2010
Format:Hardcover
I am an ex-journalist and used to be obsessed with the news but I have barely bought a newspaper for months - I've just maxed out on the misery. Murder, war, recession, Silvio Berlusconi; yes I know they're out there, but I don't need to be gorging on the grim details daily. So instead I am now getting my daily news (during my morning sit-down) from this excellent little yellow book. As well as being relentlessly cheerful, it's witty, erudite and surprising. It reminds you what a huge, various place the world is, and of (as that famously uncheerful man Philip Larkin put it in an uncharacteristic line) "the million-petalled flower of being alive".
