Product Description

Description

Astute pop/rock music fans might note the familiarity of 3614 JACKSON HIGHWAY as the former home of the legendary Muscle Shoals Sound Studio. As the Atlantic Records production team: Jerry Wexler (executive vice president), Tom Dowd (vice president in charge of engineering), and Arif Mardin (director of A&R) had done six months earlier on DUSTY IN MEMPHIS, they chose to juxtapose their pop diva with a band affectionately known as the Swampers--yes, the same ones immortalizedin Lynyrd Skynyrd's "Sweet Home Alabama". This quintet includes the talents of Eddie Hinton (lead guitar), Jimmy Johnson (rhythm guitar), Barry Beckett (keyboards), David Hood (bass), and Roger Hawkins (drums). These men were directly responsible for the sound of such timeless classics as Percy Sledge's "When a Man Loves a Woman", Aretha Franklin's "I NeverLoved a Man", and Arthur Conley's "Sweet Soul Music". Throughout 3614 JACKSON HIGHWAY they are able to create a similarseminal R&B vibe. The track list readily suggests the incongruity of Cher covering the likes of Buffalo Springfield's "For What It's Worth", Dr. John's "I Walk on Guilded Splinters", and not one, but two Bob Dylan tracks: "Lay Lady Lay" and "Tonight I'll Be Staying Here With You". However, a closerexamination reveals that not only does Cher have soul, but the Swampers are the quintessential foil for her decidedly unique style.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cherokee Soul, 24 Mar 2009

Cher was just one of many white singers who traipsed South in the late 60s in search of some Memphis magic, and it's a testament to its versatility that it worked for artists as diverse as Dusty Springfield, Lulu and even prodigal son Elvis Presley. Cher's effort is perhaps less distinctive because it didn't contain any original material, but she makes all the chestnuts here her own and they gain something from their Memphis makeover. It's easy to forget after all the vocoders and 80s 'hair metal' that Cher was once a contender, and fans of blue-eyed soul a la Dusty, Lulu, Jackie DeShannon, Laura Nyro, Evie Sands etc should give this a try.

4.0 out of 5 stars A long time coming, 19 Aug 2008

This album was released in 1969 and I believe has not been reissued until now,so a long wait. The alum was her only one foe Atco records and was recorded at the title of this album and is basically a soul record.Cher covers three Bob Dylan songs all from his then current alum Nashville Skyline.I am giving the albim 4 stars because its been a long wait but the packaging is minimal and no bonus material which is a shame as a few singles were issued in the states not on the album. But Chers voice on this is incredible,a clear sound without too much backing that spoiled her 90's recordings. To complete Chers back catalouge could we have the three albums she did for warners in the mid 70's(Stars-I'd rather believe in you And Cherished)and I'll be happy,in the meantime this is a most welcome release but slightly dissapointing.

Further to the previous comments there was a CD re-issue on Rhino Handmade with a load of bonus tracks. Turns up occasionally on Amazon and E-Bay but silly prices. Would have been nice if Rhino had just given us the same release again.
