5.0 out of 5 stars surprisingly engrossing!, 19 April 2008
By T. Cartwright (UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I was surprised at how addictive this book was. I got hooked onto the charming character of Matt from the start and then dragged through the disturbing and eventful journey of his life. The book seems very honest as events are never played for sympathy and this reflects Matt's ambivalent 'whatever' attitude that allows his abuses to continue, but also seems to keep him going. Underneath the 'central' issue of Matt's hustling and abuse by older men (which never seems to be a problem for him) is a sexually confused boy with a burgeoning intelligence and few prospects beyond the seedy narcotics filled city of Miami. The story is intriguing on many levels, not least in reading about how freely certain elements of society existed in a time and place recoloured by popular memory. Matt's experience seems so alien and detached from modern life it's easy to forget Matt actually lived this life. The later comparison with the Miami of today was really touching and I hope Matt found writing the book to be as cathartic as reading it is!

5.0 out of 5 stars The best thing I've read in a long time., 27 Aug 2007
By K. Field (Brighton, UK) - See all my reviews
(REAL NAME)
I found this little gem in a gay bookstore in Brighton, and I don't really remember why I bought it. Ok, so I do, I bought it because I didn't want to walk up to the counter with *only* a naughty DVD. But I still don't know why I chose *this* book, it must have been the cover, or the nice sounding name of the author.
All that aside, this book had me completely hooked from the start. It's basically about the author's struggles with sexuality, drugs, and learning from the people he meets. This book will make you laugh, it'll probably make you cry, bits of it may turn you on a little, and bits of it will do quite the opposite.
I wouldn't call this a gay book, or a gay person's book, I think anyone with even a modestly liberal attitude to sexuality, and drugs, and hustling, will find this a fascinating, and enjoyable read.
Full marks from me!
