Needs more coal... 29 Sep 2005

Durability:    Educational:    Fun:
I've found that my daughter, rather than push them along, prefers to let her trains go round by themselves and then do the other stuff herself - change points for them, stop them in stations, have them crash off bridges (thus requiring the attendance of emergency services) etc. This gives time for the serious business of coralling animals, putting people in stations and so on.

This is the simplest 'powered' engine from Brio - and you'll probably get one like it in any of the more basic starter track sets anyway. Also, two words of warning:
1. The switch is fiddly at best so moves between forward and reverse usually end up in some frustration, particularly for the younger user.
2. It's a little 'gutless' - my daughter likes to load on the carriages and this engine struggles to pull trains of any length.
A better bet might be the Mighty Red Action Loco which pulls longer trains much better, particularly uphill, and has much easier-to-use push buttons - separated for forward, stop and reverse (more educational this way too) - and can be switched for push along play too.

Excellent 3 Jan 2010

Excellent train, my almost 2 year old loves it, and its taken a bit of a hammering and seems very robust, battery lasts longer than I thought it would considering it gets left on quite a lot.

This train is a bit slow, the light at the front is dim, the button fiddly and it wears out batteries quickly. However all that is said from an adult point of view, from my children's point of view they love it and they're aged 2 and 5!

Enjoyed by child and parent!
Really good train can pull many carriages even up hills and over bridges. Left running for long periods of time and the battery is still going (have it about a month). Read more

Uses batteries ridiculously quickly
A great little train which goes forwards and back. Downsides are it is really slow compared to other trains, and it uses batteries so quickly it ends up costing a fortune. Read more
