Product Description

From Amazon.com

Razor-sharp guitars, hip-hop and funk rhythms, and healthy doses of ska and dance-hall reggae make this one of the most surprising albums to come out of the American heartland. But what's most remarkable about 311's breakthrough release is its enlightened attitude: In an otherwise terminally aggro style of music, where everyone strives to be harder than each other, 311 put down deadly weaponry on "Guns (Are for Pussies)." "Hive," meanwhile, disses hard drug use (but they're pro-hemp, of course), and "Misdirected Hostility" encourages, of all things, positivity ("All that angst sh*t is just cheesy"). Vocalist Nick Hexum and rapper Doug "S.A." Martinez trade lines with ease, and the band dexterously shifts gears between heavy tracks like "Down" and "Brodels," the frantic "Jackolantern's Weather," and the laid-back "All Mixed Up" and "Sweet." --Daniel Durchholz

311 were peddling rap-rock 6 years before rage against the machine released their seminal, first album; and, arguably, doing it better. I am a huge 311 fan, i own every one of their albums, but this is them at their best: raw, heavy (though not metal!), funk driven rap-rock. Ignore what the other reviewers spout about this album. It is great. There are elements of ska, and lazy chilled vibes, but first and foremost this album rocks with the best of them. In short, an upbeat, riff-laden, rhyme-strewn, beast of an album. Buy it, or remain unenlightened.

311 Rock! 9 July 2001
Format:Audio CD
Unfortunatly 311 are just about unheard of in England, which is a shame as they have to be one of the best bands around. This album is a perfect example of the brilliance that is 311. Due to their wealth of different styles it is hard catagorise the band in terms of style. This album alone boasts Reggae - "Sweet", "Purpose". Rap/Rock - "Down", "Jackolanterns Weather" Metal - "Hive" and elements of funk - "T&P combo". Anyone who appreciates good music and is into any of the above styles should definately check out 311. This is a band that understand their fans and keep writting new and origional music rather than following trends and chart music.

unexpectedly superb 3 May 2001
By A Customer
Format:Audio CD
I don't normally write reviews for CDs, but having read the previous reviewer's confused ramblings (I was going to say "misdirected hostility" but decided not) I wanted to give a more complete and generous review. A mate first introduced me to the band with this album and at first I was sceptical - the name sounding too similar to 911. But having listened to the album once, I was addicted and immediately ordered it . The sound of the band on this album is an absolute quality fusion of punk guitar/ hip hop beats/ and catchy melodies and that is why I bought the album. Not as the previous guy said for just one song which itself isn't representative of the album and is probably my least favourite. Down and Random I listen to over and over again and the riffs on Purpose are head nodding. The band are little known in the UK so you can be satisfied that the group is superb on the general relationship between quality and undergroundness. Listen to the samples buy the CD ...
